Conversations with Renee - My Lost 2009 Podcast

It was by sheer happenstance that I came across this podcast. I was on iTunes, and I typed in my name to see if I could grab a URL for my audio book, when this one hour podcast I'd done in 2009 with Yolanda Renee on Blog Talk Radio popped up. Although her show is now on haitus, you can still listen to us discuss several of my books, including My Strength, My Power, My Love; AEquana; From Out of the Shadows; Lord of Thunder; The Battle Lord's Lady, and Cut Glass: Jewels. An Interview with Guy Veryzer, Narrator of the Audio Book Version of AEQUANA

1. First off, Guy, I hand you a bouquet of flowers of your choice for doing such an excellent job of narrating my novel! Out of curiosity, what drew you to the book in the first place? What made you decide to audition?
It was very intriguing, AEquana as a title was evocative and mysterious, and the description of the story sounded subtle and scintillating! And different than books I have done so far.

 

2. You have a large repertoire of voices. My favorite, of course, is the one you gave to Buck. Are there any types of voices that are harder than others for you? Do female voices give you any trouble?

 

Buck was great, I love the character and his voice just came to me as I focused on him and your description of him, and was delighted when you said, it was just how you heard him in your head!

 

I really enjoyed Talon's deep. calm, confidant voice, and AEquana, who started out more icy, but warmed up a lot as her vulnerability was revealed, and her relationship with Talon warmed up too.

 

Finding the voices is an acting adventure, and can take a number of attempts to find the right one - And sometimes, I will start with one, and as I am reading forward, it will evolve to something different enough that I'll have to go back and redo the earlier lines.

Women's voices, are a shift of the machine, breath control and vocal placement all get shifted to a different gear, that's the best analogy I can use, but once in that gear, it's fine, the real challenger is sudden shifts back and forth from female dialogue to a male narrator and back again...Yikes, it's like driving an obstacle course!

 

3. Okay, I have to mention the lovemaking scenes. You got a kick out of me being embarrassed after hearing you narrate those pages. Do those scenes ever give you pause?

I really enjoyed your embarrassment, as an acknowledgment of my doing a good job. Because you seemed a bit worried about me doing it.

 

Reading love scenes, I am imagining both sides of the intimacy, it is like a rhythmic dance, that's a poetic way of describing it.
 

4. You told me during production that you prefer to read the material cold turkey, rather than ahead of time. Why?

I like the process of discovery, because it's how I read when reading something, hearing the voices in my head as I read a book, and I am translating it to audio, it's like the way simultaneous translators work at the UN. And when I work on films a lot of the stars don't want to know their lines or rehearse much in advance, they want to react fresh.

Not that I don't ever read ahead, and note the characters etc.

5. Out of curiosity, was there any part of AEQUANA that you liked the most? Was there a scene that forced you to stop to collect yourself before going on?

Hummm, don't want to be a spoiler here....Let's say, I love the sharpness of their first meeting, and Aequana's adventurous dash for freedom (is that spoiling?)

6. Do you keep notes as you read aloud? Like descriptive reminders as to which voice was for whom, etc.?

I do make notes, more and more, to keep track, but sometimes I still have to go back and listen to a character's voice, if they appear early on and then only come back much later...it can be hard to describe exactly the voice you gave them in words; grumpy older Pentagon General, southern...hummm? What part of the South, is he smart, nice, clipped and curt?

7. Now that I look back on it, because AEQUANA is generally told from the hero's point of view, I can see how having a male narrator enhanced the story. Do you have any difficulty when it's a woman's POV?

No problem from a woman's point of view, I just pop on a wig, heels and dress to get in the mood....just kidding. (Though it is a fun idea!) Really, I have so many close women friends, and have spent so much time talking and listening...Also I have written a lot, and writing from a woman's point of view is much harder than reading from a woman's point of view.

8. Finally, I have to ask, but what started you on the path of narrating books for ACX?

I have avidly listened to audiobooks for many years, and am very picky about narrators voices and styles, and I have always loved to read aloud, and am an actor, and had been working on submitting Narration samples to various audiobook publishers, including Audible, so I when was emailed about the creation of ACX, and watched a seminar about it on the SAG/AFTRA website, and I thought, WOW, this makes it easy for me to make it happen.(Not that there isn't a big learning curve, especially since you are recording the book as well as narrating.)

And I have been learning more and more all the time, and getting more wonderful projects from wonderful (and really lovely) authors, and my latest, booking is an author who heard me on an ACX book and contacted me for her bestselling Scottish romance series, and she got onto ACX so we could work together on their platform.

 

The process of collaborating with an author on taking these book to a new medium has been great, as with working with you on AEquana. Uploading chapters, and getting your responses was so delightful! I didn't want it to end! (And yousaid you didn't either!)

My Interview With: Rowe Maine (MY STRENGTH, MY POWER, MY LOVE)

LM: Yesterday we got to talk with Grey. Today is Rowe's turn. Once Rowe Maine, he's now the second half of the synergistic couple known as Rowe and Grey. Welcome, Rowe!

Rowe: Hello, Linda!

LM: I'm going to start off by asking you the same question I asked Grey. Do you believe the creatures that tried to take over Bellac, and whom you two managed to "push" away with your new found power, do you believe they'll be back?

Rowe: You would ask me, wouldn't you? (chuckles) Let's just say that I wouldn't be surprised if they did. But I hope they're intelligent enough to believe that if we defeated them once, we can do it again.

LM: And considering how much damage you and the other Synergians did to their ship.

Rowe: That, too.

LM: Since your trial, has there been any progress to have a Synergian on the board of Academicians?

Rowe: I'm glad you asked that question. Yes, there has, and Master Plees has been at the forefront to get the change enacted.

LM: Any idea how long before the dream becomes a reality?

Rowe: Soon. Within the next few months, I'm sure.

LM: In the meantime, what about the other Synergians who have been declared unmatched because of the Five Year Law?

Rowe: As you might have suspected, they have sent petitions to the Academy. Fortunately, they are willing to wait until the change-over has occurred.

LM: Do you believe that law will be rewritten, allowed to stand as is, or expunged?

Rowe: Now, that I cannot tell you. Personally, Grey and I would prefer to see the law rewritten. It can't be removed completely. There has to be some kind of guideline, some point where an unmatched Synergian must relent to the fact that he or she will not find her life mate, so that they can be brought into the Academy as teachers. We just believe that a flat five year timeline isn't, and never has been, the answer. Don't ask me what new rules will be written. I'm thankful I won't have to face that task.

LM: Well, I'm glad things turned out the way they did for you and Grey. Are you two still the only Synergians whose power emanates from a space craft, rather than from ground level?

Rowe: (laughs) So far!

LM: Thank you again for getting with us, Rowe. Here's wishing you and Grey many wonderful years together.

Rowe: Thank you! We've enjoyed ourselves tremendously!

My Interview With: Grey Dansis (MY STRENGTH, MY POWER, MY LOVE)

LM: I am very happy to have Grey Dansis with me today, from MY STRENGTH, MY POWER, MY LOVE. No, wait! It would be just Grey now,right?

Grey: That's right. Synergized couples are referred to by their first names. Hi, Linda!

LM: Hi! So tell me, since you and Rowe were synergized, have you had that spaceship you two battled successfully come back?

Grey: No, and we don't know if it will again. We'll have to wait and see.

LM: Could you explain something about being synergized? I mean, we understand what it means, and how it changes you and Rowe. But do synergized couples have wedding ceremonies?

Grey: Wedding ceremonies? Like regular couples?

LM: Yes.

Grey: No, but we have synergized ceremonies. Rowe and I stood before our fellow Synergians, and we recited the words of power and love before them.

LM: But no one had to proclaim you synergized?

Grey: (giggle) Not hardly. Not when we glowed in front of them.

LM: Let's say I come to Bellac. How would I know you and Rowe are a couple?

Grey: I"m sorry. I don't understand the question.

LM: I'm not a Synergian. How do non-Synergians know which couples are synergized? Are mated, in other words?

Grey: Well, first off, synergized couples wear the dark purple jumpsuits. Otherwise, the only way you could tell is to watch us when we're together. Mated couples are openly affectionate, but to a point. I mean, we won't make love out in public, be we often hold hands, hug, kiss, or simply have an arm around the other's waist. We keep in constant physical contact.

LM: But they only act that way with their own mates, right? Not with other Synergians.

Grey: That's correct.

LM: Is that a necessity, all that constant physical contact? Is it part of keeping up with your combined power?

Grey: No, not really. It's just... who we are.

LM: Do you often go out among the public?

Grey: Not often, but we do.

LM: How does the public learn about you, or know about you?

Grey: They see us on the telecasts.

LM: How has public support been since you and Rowe were allowed to be recognized as synergized mates?

Grey: It's been overwhelming! We've gotten so many messages from the public, sending us their congratulations. It's been... it's touched us deeply. To all Bellacians reading this, Rowe and I truly appreciate your love and generosity. Thank you and bless you all!

LM: And may I add my congratulations. I wish you and Rowe many years of happiness.

Grey: Thank you, Linda! And thank you again for having us on your blog.

LM: It's been a pleasure, Grey.

My Interview With: Yulen D'Jacques (THE BATTLE LORD'S LADY)

LM: Thanks to this nifty little gadget Master Hunter left with me, we're honored to have with us Yulen D'Jacques, the Battle Lord of Alta Novis. Hello! Thank you for agreeing to this interview!

YD: I must say, all of this seems rather... odd. (laughs)

(Atty off-side: This is definitely one for the history books.)

LM: Yulen, the general consensus is that you're going to be known as a greater battle lord than your father was. Would you say it's because of the work you and Atty have been doing to build a bridge of trust between normals and Mutah?

YD: This is the first time I've heard that rumor. (laughs) But if it were true, I would have to agree with your reasoning. So much time and energy has been wasted in the past with removing the Mutah.

LM: You're speaking of the yearly cleaning sweeps that all battle lords go on.

YD: Yes. I realize now it's a barbaric practice. Because of Atty, I've come to see how senseless the bloodbath was, and I feel I need to atone for all the misery I've caused in the past when I've gone on cleaning missions.

(Indistinct voices in the background.)

LM: Is everything okay? Are you needing to close communications?

YD: (laughs) No. That's our physician, Dr. MaGrath. He's wanting to know when he's going to get a chance to talk to you.

LM: Tell Liam maybe at a later date. I have another question for you, Yulen. Other than the fact that you view Mutah in a totally different light, has marriage to Atty changed you in other ways?

YD: How much time do you have? (laughs) Seriously! I have a list! (laughs)

(Strange male voice: That's one way! The man has learned to laugh again.)

LM: (laughs) Tell Liam thank you for that observation!

YD: He's correct, you know. After my father's death, and I assumed the position of battle lord, I turned hard and unforgiving. A real first-class bastard. Atty has brought purpose into my life. I know that sounds stupid, but I don't care. She's my sunlight. I feel more sure of myself and my decisions. I feel stronger when she's with me. There's more clarity.

LM: So you're saying you're a better man because of her?

YD: Because of her love and trust in me. There's rarely a day that goes by that I am not humbled by the turn of events that brought us together.

LM: One more question. I hear there's a huge influx of people settling in Alta Novis, and word is it's because of you and Atty. And the fact that there's a truce between Normal and Mutah compounds. Do you see Alta Novis growing to the point where you'll have to shut your gates to newcomers? Or maybe build another compound?

YD: That's a great question, and one that Mother, Liam, Atty, and I have been discussion. For one, we'll never close the gates to stem the flow of newcomers. Never, be they Normals or Mutah. Bloods, however, are another issue. (chuckles)

LM: Of course.

YD: As for Alta Novis, we're already expanding, but in the next few years I hope to have New Bearinger rebuilt enough to take in the overflow. Foster City's also taking in a lot of new settlers.

LM: It's been fascinating to talk to you, Yulen. Thank you again, and I wish you and Atty many years of success and happiness.

YD: Thank you, Linda. This has been an experience we will talk about for years.

My Interview With: Atrilan "Atty" Ferran D'Jacques (THE BATTLE LORD'S LADY)

LM: By some interstellar, inter-dimentional, time-portalish way, thanks to Master Hunter and some equipment he left behind for me to use, I was able to contact Atrilan Ferran D'Jacques, better known as Atty, from THE BATTLE LORD'S LADY. Hello, Atty! Can you hear me?

AD: Yes, I can hear you!

LM: Thank you for your understanding, and for agreeing to this interview.

AD: Did you say I was three hundred years in your future?

LM: That's the approximate time I was given.

AD: Wow. And there's no mutants where you are?

LM: Not like there are in your world. Tell me, Atty, how are relations between the Mutah and Normals now? Are they any better since you and Yulen were married?

AD: As Yulen would say, it's a work in progress. To be honest, we don't expect miracles. We don't even expect any major developments to happen. I mean, hatred between Mutah and Normals has evolved over, what did you say? Three hundred years? And the war for survival has been going on for longer than that. If what we're doing to bring our two cultures together is the start of something that continues on long after our deaths, then we'll be more than happy with that legacy.

LM: My prayers are with you. Oh, Atty, I have a question from one of your readers. She wants to know what your deepest desires are.

AD: As in...?

LM: Between you and Yulen.

AD: (slight pause) Yulen is my deepest desire. Right now my life is more than I could have ever dreamed it would be.

LM: Where do you see yourself a year from now? Five years from now? Fifty years?

AD: By Yulen's side, helping to defend Alta Novis and his people, as well as my kind.

LM: What about children? Having a family?

AD: (nervous laugh) Eventually, yes.

LM: Okay, I'm going to ask a really dumb, over-used question. What's the best thing about being the battle lord's lady?

AD: Honestly? The fact that I don't have to go all frou-frou. You know, act like a snobby bitch because people expect me to "act my station". Know what I mean?

LM: Yes, I do.

AD: Yulen has put very few restrictions on me. He allows me to continue my hunting because he knows how much I enjoy it. How much it means to me. He doesn't expect me to be anything else but myself, and for that I'll love him forever.

LM: You have been truly blessed in this marriage.

AD: Yes, I have.

LM: Atty, I have one more question before we wrap this up. Do you think your world will eventually return to the world as it was, the way it is in my time?

AD: Who knows? We can only hope, right? Or maybe... maybe the way it is now in my time, maybe it's not so bad. Only time will tell, right?

LM: Right. Thank you for talking with us, Atty.

AD: Thank you for getting in touch with me. Shall I hand this thing over to Yulen now?

LM: Yes! Please do!

My Interview With: Terran Vosstien, aka StarLight (HEARTFAST, HEARTCRYSTAL)

LM: Thanks to this little interstellar communications device left behind by Master Hunter, I am delighted to be able to interview his wife, Terran Vosstien, also known as StarLight. Hello, Star! Thank you so much for being here today!

SL: You’re welcome. I take it you’ve already interviewed Hunter, since you’re talking to me through the comm link. How did he like the photo I sent for him? Did he notice it?

LM: Oh, most definitely. I'm pretty sure he's going to say something to you when he gets back home.

SL: (laughs) I wouldn't doubt that.

LM: I have a confession to make. You have one hot husband!

SL: I have to agree with you there.

LM: If I may ask, how are you feeling? Are you completely healed?

SL: Dr. Perlakian says I am, although there are times I’ll move the wrong way, and I’ll feel a twinge. When you’ve been through something like that, you never can fully recover. Your life is permanently changed.

LM: I can understand. Speaking of life, I’ve had several people ask me about how you learned about your powers. I know it’s a very uncomfortable topic for you, and that in your past you’ve suffered a very traumatic experience. If you prefer not to answer, I will respect that.

SL: At this time I would prefer not to answer. I’m finally able to open up to Udo and tell him, and Dr. Perlakian says that I’m beginning to heal emotionally because of it. I know we’ve talked about doing a third book...

LM: Tentatively entitled HeartStorm.

SL: I like that title. It’s very apropos. Anyway, I think I’ll be ready to tell you about my childhood, and why I ended up spending four years wandering through the universe before I hooked up with the Guardians.

LM: Oooh! I’m looking forward to it. But if I may ask, personally, I wondered how you found out you could survive in space without oxygen?

SL: (light laughter) I have no problem answering that one. I was flying one day... actually, I was sun dancing, and I kept rising higher and higher in the sky. I was so absorbed in the sunlight, I totally lost track of how far up I was. I didn’t feel giddy or dizzy from lack of oxygen, either. There was nothing to warn me. Next thing I knew, I was in space.

LM: Well, thank you so much for speaking with us. I know your time is limited.

SL: I am delighted you asked! Just wait until the other Guardians hear about this. You just know they’ll be hacked they weren’t asked, too. (laughs)

LM: (laughs) Maybe next time. Thanks again, StarLight.

SL: You're welcome. Good night, Linda.

My Interview With: Udo Vosstien, aka Master Hunter (HEARTFAST, HEARTCRYSTAL)

LM: With me in the studio today is Udo Vosstien, also known as Master Hunter, the hero in my books HeartFast and HeartCrystal. What a surprise! Welcome, Udo!

MH: Thank you, Linda, and thank you for the invitation. I'm glad I was able to make it. (nervous laugh) That's an interesting photo you've posted.

LM: I never expected you to show up in person. (laughs) You sort of popped in from out of nowhere. By the way, blame StarLight for the photo.

MH: (laughs) I should have known Terran had something to do with it. No, Provoker and I were on an assignment in this quadrant, and I thought why not just show up and surprise you? It was a straight shot, but my time is limited.

LM: Speaking of Provoker, how are things between you and him?

MH: There are times we all rub each other wrong, but in the long run we're Guardians. I trust him with my life. I trust Terran's life with him, just as he trusts us to risk our necks to save his butt. (laughs)

LM: How is reconstruction coming along on Guardian headquarters?

MH: Slow. Deceiver told the bigwigs to concentrate their rebuilding efforts on getting the city rejuvenated first. The people need to feel safe again, and the quickest way to do that is to get things back to normal, or feeling normal, as soon as possible. Our headquarters is adequate for the moment. We can get calls for our help, and we can reply to them. The rest like the training facilities and labs and all can wait.

LM: If you don't mind me getting a little personal, is the honeymoon still going strong with StarLight?

MH: (looks around) Did Star send you something other than photos? (laughs) Let's just say life is never dull. Terran is an incredible, brave, beautiful, and loving woman. I feel blessed every day we're together.

LM: You sound like a man hopelessly in love.

MH: The last thing I expected when I joined the Guardians was to find the other half of my heart.

LM: Okay, I know you're needing to be off, but I have one last question. What's next for you and Terran? Are you planning on raising a family at Guardian headquarters?

MH: Terran and I have discussed this. We plan to remain Guardians, in spite of the risk factors involved. Our fellow Guardians are delighted we're staying and raising a family among them. Only the future knows what will come, and how far we'll be blessed.

LM: Well, thank you again for taking the time to transport over here to answer a few questions. It was a delight to see you again!

MH: You're welcome, Linda. Anytime.

My Interview With: Prof. Sarah Drumman Morr (RUNNER'S MOON: SIMOLIF)

LM: Thank you so much for coming today, Sarah!

SM: Thank you for having me! Most women usually want to speak to my husband. (laughs)

LM: Well, call me guilty. But if it's any comfort, I wanted to speak with the both of you.

SM: Thank you! Now when I go home, I can go, "Nyah, nyah" to Simon. (laughs)

LM: My first question is about married life, but I promise not to get too personal. You and Simon have a very unusual lifestyle, especially considering he's an alien in every sense of the word. Have you found it at times to be more difficult than you anticipated?

SM: Actually, most of the time, it isn't as hard as most people would assume.

LM: What makes you say that?

SM: Because he and Jeb had several years to acclimate themselves to our world. They learned what kinds of foods they could eat, they learned enough human attributes to keep from calling attention to themselves. If I disregard the fact that I have a well-built, green-skinned alien walking around the apartment without a stitch on, it wouldn't be any different than having a human husband.

LM: I understand that the two of you are complete opposites in other ways, too.

SM: (laughs) That's probably the understatement of the year. Simon is very tidy. Very neat and orderly. A place for everything, and everything in its place. Me? I'm a total slob. He stacks the glasswear in the cabinets by heighth. He even folds his dirty clothes to place them in the laundry hamper! (laughs)

LM: He does most of the cooking, too, right?

SM: Oh, yeah, but that's usually out of necessity. I sometimes have night classes, or I have to stay late for some reason, a meeting, or I need to prepare a lesson, or some other reason. Simon's job is a strict eight-to-five job, so most of the time he gets home before I do. Besides, he loves to cook. I never knew there could be so many ways to fix tofu. (laughs)

LM: You also have to keep track of the Arra, right?

SM: Right. I guess you could say I'm the "eye in the sky" for the whole family.

LM: Speaking of "the family", there's something I've been wanted to ask you. Do you and Hannah ever get together and compare notes, considering you're married to Ruinos brothers?

SM: All the time. (laughs) We're always calling each other to ask each other a question, or to get some ideas about certain things.

LM: What kinds of questions or things, if I may ask?

SM: Mmm, like wondering if Ruinos can eat certain things. Did Jeb ever eat such-and-such, and if he did, did he like it, dislike it, or have a reaction? (laughs) We also trade notes about Christmas presents.

LM: Christmas presents? Oh! Wait! What about birthdays?

SM: You mean Ruinos birthdays? We've all picked a specific a day of the year for Jeb and Simon and Roni's birthdays. We gave up trying to equate the Ruinos calendar with our own.


LM: Wow. I never thought about birthdays before. Thanks for sharing that little tidbit. By the way, I also got a kick out of using your staff ID for your picture.

SM: You're welcome. It was Simon's idea. Frankly, I don't think I photograph well.

LM: I will disagree with you, Sarah. I think you're a very beautiful and very lucky woman. You have what a lot of women would kill to have - a highly successful, professional career and a loving, fulfilling marriage to a man who turns every woman's eye.

SM: (laughs) I've never thought of it quite that way.

LM: Well, it looks like our time is up. Thank you again for sparing a few minutes out of your busy day. I know your readers will be delighted.

My Interview With: Simolif Gitall Morr, aka Simon (RUNNER'S MOON: SIMOLIF)

LM: I’m delighted to announce my guest for today. Simolif Gitall Morr, thank you for coming to my blog!

SM: Please call me Simon. I’m happy to be here. Thank you for inviting Sarah and me, as well as my brother and his life mate. And Tiron and Thom.

LM: I’ll be interviewing Jebaral and Hannah, as well as Tiron and Thom, later on, but I wanted to start with you since you’re the older brother.

SM: And the handsomer one. (laughter)

LM: First off, I’ve been wanting to ask you, when you and the other Ruinos first landed here on Earth, how long did you and Jebaral remain together? What made you decide to part and go your separate ways?

SM: Jebaral and I remained together for the first fourteen months after we first landed here. During that time we helped each other learn your language while we took on odd jobs that paid under the table, as they say. We discovered we were good at construction sites, because of our strength and agility. The fact that we were “immigrants” was immaterial to the foremen and bosses.

LM: Why did you split up?

SM: It was an amiable split. I wanted to stay in the city where I felt I could blend in with the other humans in case the Arra reappeared. Jebaral wanted to go into hiding instead. We’d passed through some small towns, and he felt that their remoteness would be better suited for hiding. He believed the Arra would be drawn to the larger cities, and be less inclined to check out the littler towns.

LM: I think you both have valid points. Simon, I have another question I’ve been wanting to ask. What got you into driving a Harley motorcycle? (laughs) The last thing I can envision is the sight of a green-skinned alien wearing black leather pants and jacket, and driving a black Harley.

SM: (laughs) You can ask Jebaral. I’ve always been attracted to life boats and other small craft that travel fast. Once I saw my first motorcycle, and realized how free and open the driver is on the seat, I was determined to own one. In fact, I bought my first bike before I ever rented an apartment.

LM: So you have the Harley, and Sarah gets to drive the standard sedan?

SM: Pretty much, although Sarah is talking now about maybe getting a side car.

LM: So what's next for the two of you? Are you staying in Templeton? Or is there a chance you may move to Tumbril Harbor to be closer to your brother?

SM: You never know, Linda.

LM: (laughs) Now you're being evasive.

SM: (laughs) Guilty as charged, as Sarah would say.
