Croat was a Lupan, one of the half-man, half-beast creatures long thought to be extinct or fabricated from fairy tales. Lupan were folklore, nothing more than a myth.

Tora was a Sensitive. Her kind really existed, and normal people feared Sensitives because it was common knowledge that all Sensitives were evil and practiced the dark magicks.

Captured and thrown together inside Baron Agrino’s dungeon, they discovered a connection between them that defied all reason, and a love that transcended all boundaries.

But is their love strong enough to stop the baron from what he’ll do with every Lupan he plans to capture? Or, worse, what he’ll do with Tora once he learns what she is?

* * * * *
1. The last armed man gave the still figure a final kick before he left, locking the door behind him. With the only source of light gone, the cell once again grew pitch black. Her quiet world shifted back into place—only now she was sharing it with another person. A person who had been beaten nearly to death. From where she sat, Tora could hear the poor man’s labored breathing. Every few seconds he would groan in pain. Her heart went out to him.

2. The baron’s men advanced toward them, rifles ready as they proceeded to ring the couple. Someone ordered for a net to be brought, and one pair of boots disappeared from Croat’s line of vision. At the sound of a gun being cocked, he flattened his ears against his head and bared his bloody fangs. A growl of hatred reverberated in his throat as he raised his head to stare at them. To dare them; to threaten them. He could feel Tora quaking beneath him as they both waited for the inevitable to happen.

3. “I hear her screaming in my head,” he gasped, fighting the terror and agony he was receiving from her. “I can feel my hands, like they’ve been covered in fire.” Looking up at the elderly woman, Croat said, “For a moment there, I was free of her. I think she was unconscious, but it was like whatever cord was running between us had been cut. I was finally free of her…and it was a feeling I never want to feel again.”

4. His touch was overwhelming. At no time had her mother explained that a connection between a Sensitive and her life partner would become a two-way thing. At that moment, when it was taking all of her strength to keep herself conscious, it was Croat who was feeding her with his own emotional power, helping her survive; making her feel alive and sane. His body was like the sun, pouring warmth and energy into every dark crevasse in her withered psyche. It signaled a promise, beckoning and pleading for her to relent in order for him to claim her. She could feel herself trying to answer his silent, primitive call. It was a call she couldn’t explain or identify, yet she realized it was provoking something new from her. A new and different kind of feeling she’d never experienced before in her life.

5. “When a Sensitive touches the one who will become her lifelong partner, that connection forms. She has no warning it will happen, and neither does he. But when it does, that connection is what bonds them together for life. But a regular Sensitive’s bond with her husband, although it is lifelong, does weaken as the distance between them grows, should the two become separated.” Deelaht gently shook her head. “Not so for a Beginner. Be it a mile, or a hundred miles, you will be as aware of her as she will be of you, just as if you were standing next to each other.” She bit her lower lip then added, “And anything that happens to either of you will be felt by the other just as strongly.”

6. She stood before them, hands curled into fists at the end of ramrod-straight arms pressed by her sides. “We’re a game to the baron. We’re an exciting hunt on a boring afternoon. He has been taking men, women, and children from the surrounding villages on a regular basis and doing gods know what with them. Do you honestly believe, now that he knows you really exist, that he’s not going to put every man he can on your trail to try and find you? Dearest heavens, you were a myth! When normal people find out the myth is real, can you imagine the terror he could incite? They nearly killed Croat, and tried to make him feed on me because the baron knows how invincible he’ll be if he has a whole army of Lupan.”

Six on Sunday - AEQUANA

Six Paragraphs from AEQUANA
A sensuous fantasy romance novel
Available at Amazon, B&N, ARe, and BookStrand

1.
Watching her slipping into it was like watching her transform from a human being into a creature of mythology. Her feet slid into the tail-like lower portion. The skin encased her legs, holding them firmly together. It eased over her hips and buttocks, and the upper portion came up far enough to cover her small breasts, but no further. There was nothing around her neck or shoulders to restrict arm movement or block the flow of water from her gills.

2.
She’d have sweet dreams tonight. Dreams of a cafĂ© a lait man with eagle wings swooping down to lift her above the waves. When he’d shown her the transmitter, just when she was about to break down crying, she couldn’t stop herself from hugging him. She wish, though, that he’d put his arms around her and held her. Held her and hushed her and reassured her they were safe, and they would always be safe as long as he was there to protect her.

3.
At some point she remembered the monofilament line. Invisible underwater, she traced it with her hands and began wrapping it around her palm as she climbed upward. She tried to pull it, signaling Talon for help. There was a sudden ragged jerk, pulling her sideways for a dozen feet before it abruptly let her go. The line wrapped around her hand went limp. One of the sharks had snagged it or bitten through it. There was no longer any way she could let Talon know what she was facing. A scream rose in her throat, and Æquana started swimming for her life, praying she could out-race their rushing attack.

4.
There was no way she could anticipate the soul-breaking happiness that flooded her senses when he took her mouth. Possessively. Hungrily. Every pore in her skin drank of his touch and his heat as his kisses sent her over the edge of sanity. A whimper died in her throat when she felt him roll closer to her, until her entire length was trapped beneath him... and the whimper became a low moan.

5.
“Shh!” Talon threw up a hand to stay the man’s barrage of questions, waiting for his call to be answered. When it was, Talon held back none of his outrage from his voice. “Slaw. You’d better listen very carefully because I’m only going to say this once. You have kidnapped my wife, you sorry son of a bitch, and I want her back. You have two hours to deliver her to me at the Bellagio or I swear to God I will bring down full retribution on you. Do you understand me? You’ve made the last mistake you’ll ever make. Two hours, Slaw.” Before the man could respond, Talon ended the call. Then he made a second one.

6.
From somewhere Shipp produced a thick collar with a sponge-like coating on the inside. He snapped it around her neck, checking to make sure it was loose enough to where it didn’t impede her gills, but tight enough to keep her from slipping out of it. A small padlock secured it. Once he was satisfied, he let her go, and Æquana felt her body slide backwards until it came to rest on floor. She watched him climb out of the tank and go over to the wall where a hose ran from the side of the tank to a faucet.

Bock Gammon was a freedom runner. A man with a space ship for hire. He had heard of Replacements and knew they existed, but he had never personally come across one. In fact, he found the whole idea repugnant--growing a living being specifically for the purpose of harvesting his body parts. So did the governments in many of the galaxies who declared Replacements illegal.

Which was why he was stunned to discover his latest assignment was to bring a Replacement to one of the wealthiest men in the Chatta Dul system. If he hadn't so desperately needed the money, he wouldn't have accepted the job.

It didn't take long for Bock to realize that Rhea 41070 wasn't just one-of-a-kind, she was also unlike any woman he had ever met. And the closer they got to the point of delivery, the more he knew he couldn't just walk away and leave her behind to be dissected. He had to somehow find a way to save her, despite the odds and hundreds of well-armed men awaiting their return.

Warning! Contains mutilation, idol worship, twisted old men, blackmail, apathy for human life, black market medicine, a shootout, a taste of the good life, and more gold than you can shake a stick at.

My Interview With: John "Talon" Eagletalon (AEQUANA)

LM: Hello? John? Are you there? Can you hear me? Everyone, my guest today is John Eagletalon, also known by his code name "Talon", from the book AEQUANA.

JE: Hello. Yes, I can hear you quite clearly. That's part of the problem with living in the Colorado mountains. Sometimes reception can be iffy. How are you doing?

LM: I'm doing great! How about you? How's married life, you once confirmed bachelor?

JE: It's incredible. Of course, not many men can say they're married to a mermaid.

LM: Makes for some pretty strange moments, eh?

JE: That's putting it mildly. (chuckle) Just when I think I have this woman figured out, she ups and does something that throws me for a loop.

LM: Such as? Give us an example.

JE: Well, we just got back from a job up in Seattle where we were hired to find a yacht this guy was suspected of deliberately sinking. Maja found the boat in about three hundred feet of water, too deep for a regular diver to find, but not for her. But its location told us the guy had plotted out where to sink the boat. Anyway, Maja went inside the cabins to see if she could spot anything unusual, or maybe find a clue that could pin the crime on the suspect. What she found was appalling.

LM: What was it?

JE: A body. A young man. Maybe late teens or early twenties. I'd already radioed the Coast Guard the location. The discovery really shook Maja up. I mean, she was pale and shaking, but she said she had to go back down into the boat.

LM: Why?

JE: She didn't tell me. I figured she needed to check out a few more things. Instead, about twenty minutes later, she reappeared on the surface with the body!

LM: Oh, my gosh! No!

JE: I was shocked, too. She'd wrapped it in a sheet and dragged it up to the surface, rather than leave it down there. The body was in pretty sad shape anyway, and she was afraid that by leaving it down there any longer, it would fall completely apart and make any identification that much harder, if not impossible.

LM: I interviewed Maja yesterday, and she never mentioned the job. She did say, however, that she's enthusiastic about the new company.

JE: Yeah, well, what she did took a lot of guts. I'm very, very proud of her.

LM: Speaking of the company, is business pretty steady?

JE: Business couldn't be better. Buck, my grandfather, had to hire extra help to run the emporium because he wanted to handle the job offers personally. You know, screen the calls, schedule the jobs, and make sure that there's no major danger involved for me or Maja.

LM: He also runs the website for the company, right?

JE: Yeah, and he does a damn good job of it, considering he's in his late sixties. (laughs)

LM: How long do you think the company will remain open? Think you'll be doing this kind of work for the next twenty or so years?

JE: There's no telling. I do know that if and when we have children, we'll have to severely curtail the number of jobs we take. I don't know, Linda. Fortunately, money won't be an issue.

LM: That's good to hear. You are one very lucky man.

JE: That I am. No argument with you there.

LM: Thank you again for being here today, John. I wish you and Maja every happiness.

JE: Thanks again, Linda. It's been our pleasure.

My Interview With: Maja Eagletalon (AEQUANA)

ME: Am I late? I'm sorry! I just got here!

LM: Hello, Maja! No, you're not late. Thanks for coming!

ME: Hold on... okay. There. Hi, Linda!

LM: You ready now?

ME: Yeah. Sorry about that. I'm trying to be more punctual, but just when it looks like I'm running on time, something happens. Like today I got stuck at a railroad crossing, and the train must've had a hundred cars. (laughs)

LM: Don't worry about it. Everyone, please welcome Maja Eagletalon, also known as AEquana. I understand you just got back from a job near Seattle. How's the business going?

ME: It's great! John is very careful which jobs he accepts, and how long each one lasts, so I won't exhaust myself, or feel overloaded.

LM: Business is booming then, eh?

ME: (giggles) Definitely!

LM: By the way, did you ever get John to build you a pool at your home up in the mountains?

ME: No. No pool, but he did buy us this humongous hot tub. He built a deck behind the house for it. I swear that thing can hold a dozen people!

LM: So you don't miss having a pool?

ME: No. (whispers) You have no idea how romantic a hot tub can be on a snowy night. With the steaming water, and snow covering the porch, just the two of us in the tub with our mugs of hot chocolate. Mmm...

LM: (laughs) Wow. What a mental image! And you don't get cold?

ME: Not until you climb out of the tub. (laughs)

LM: Maja, your gills and your ability to breath underwater are natural for you. You were born that way. Do you think there's any chance that if you and John have children that they may be equally blessed?

ME: It's something we've discussed. If such a thing happens, it happens. The good thing is that I'll be able to help our children adjust to their ability.

LM: Any plans to have children in the near future?

ME: John and I aren't using any precautions, if that's what you're asking. If it happens, it happens. (giggles) Personally, I can't wait to be a mother.

LM: Well, I want to wish you all the luck, and hope your wishes come true.

ME: Thank you!

Pre-Judging a Book By Its Genre - DON'T!

I've been reading a lot of twits on Twitter recently, and holding my tongue. I've also been reading other blogs regarding books of a particular genre, and biting my lips to keep from responding.

Well, this is my blog, and the gloves are off. That being done, all I have to say is:

Do Not Judge A Book By Its Genre!

I write sci-fi romances. I've lost count of the number of people, especially reviewers, who have written to tell me that they 1) normally don't like sci-fi romances, especially erotic ones, or 2) will read them, but have pretty much figured they were all the same. But then they read something of mine, and have all their preconceived notions blown out of the water.

Plain and simple, I write the stories I want to read. I have probably read three or four sci-fi romances in my lifetime. Yeah, I know that what I write is nothing like them, but I never wanted to emulate or imitate them. Take the sex out of my books, and you'll still have a loving romance, characters you'll care about, suspense, action, angst, and an HEA.

So if you are not a fan of sci-fi romances, still give one of mine a chance. Just one, that's all I ask. Don't put on blinders and lump every writer's books into the same pile. The GENRE may be the same, but our voices are totally different. And - who know? - you may end up adding sci-fi romances to your TBB/TBR pile. :)
