Six on Sunday - HIS LAST REQUEST

Six paragraphs from HIS LAST REQUEST
An erotic apocalyptic, sci-fi romance (Christmas theme)

If you had only one more day to live, what would you do?

Corwin knows. And no one and nothing is going to stop him from the telling the woman he has loved silently and from afar how much he cares for her.
****

1.
Corwin stared down at himself. The fresh blue t-shirt he'd donned before coming over here was already soaked with sweat, as were his jeans. Perspiration rolled down his face, and his head felt like it was going to explode. Standing in the meager shadow provided by the porch did little to keep the stifling heat from penetrating all the way to the marrow of his bones, to suck out every last drop of moisture from his body. There was no wind. It was over one hundred twenty degrees Fahrenheit, and climbing. And it was around the middle of December, a week before Christmas.
2.  Holding out the handful of silk flowers, Corwin watched as she glanced down at them. "I came to give you these and wish you a Merry Christmas. And to tell you goodbye."
3. "Because I wanted you to know I care very much about you. I wanted you to know I'm not like those other guys you've dated or been engaged to, like that Dennis creep who gave you more weepy days than happy ones, and couldn't care less that you like ginger tea and PayDay candy bars. I want to prove to you that there is someone who won't treat you like crap just to make themselves look important. I want to show you that you deserve to be loved and cherished. And that person..." He pointed to himself. "...is me."
4. To his surprise, Sadie gave a soft moan and opened her mouth to touch his with the tip of her tongue. Corwin felt his walls of resistance crumbling. And when her hand pressed against his chest, then slowly began to make its way down to the front of his jeans, his whole body began shaking.
5. Silently, she began peeling off her sleeveless blouse. There was a sense of urgency to her movements, and he understood why. She began jerking the top sheet off the bed while he finished undressing and joined her.
6. She took a shaky breath. "Why now, Corwin? Why did I have to find you now? Why was I such an idiot before? We could have had so many days of happiness. We could have been planning on having a future together."

If you had only one more day to live, what would you do? Corwin knows. And no one and nothing is going to stop him from the telling the woman he has loved silently and from afar how much he cares for her.
***
The bouquet he held was silk. Finding actual flowers was nearly impossible, and he wasn't going to waste another minute searching for a florist and spending useless money on the real thing. That is, if there were any florists and flowers left. He was lucky he had purchased these on a whim just prior to hell breaking loose.

He stood in front of the white door and stared at the slim, rectangular doorbell embedded in the wall. There was no knocker. Just a small cut glass window for people to peer through. A quick glance at his watch told him it was already past ten p.m., but the world was as bright as noon. Taking a deep breath, he raised his fist and knocked instead.

After a few seconds of silence, he knocked again. This time a surprised face looked out the window, spotted him, and her eyes widened further. There was the sound of a deadbolt lock sliding back, and the door opened a few inches.

Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail. Loose hairs were plastered to her face and neck from her own sweat. There was the awkward silence, then she spoke.

"Corwin?"

"Hi, Sadie."

"What are you doing here?"

Holding out the handful of silk flowers, Corwin watched as she glanced down at them. "I came to give you these and wish you a Merry Christmas. And to tell you goodbye."

Six on Sunday - BEQUEATHED

6 Paragraphs from BEQUEATHED
An erotic fantasy romance
Available from Red Rose Publishing
http://redrosepublishing.com/books/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=265&products_id=933

1. “Hey, Mike. What should we do today? Want to go down to the lake and see if we can catch tonight‘s dinner?” She grabbed a clean bowl from the dish drainer and poured some kibbles into it. “Here go you, old man,” she said, bending down and placing it on the floor where she wouldn’t accidentally step on it. Straightening up, she looked back at the cat, and her heart leaped into her throat as the dark shadow vanished from behind the window. Her first reaction was immediately replaced with indignant anger.

2. “You’ve heard it, too?” She glanced around the living area, seeing it now from a whole new perspective. “How? You mean it’s haunted?” Tendrils of fear crawled up inside her stomach and threatened to chill her from the inside out, until she caught sight of Mike casually make his way across the living room floor as he headed toward the kitchen. The cat’s nonchalant manner reminded her of how the animal had reacted - or rather, hadn’t reacted - around Horne. In fact, the Bengal gave the deputy a wide berth as it sought out its breakfast. The cat didn’t necessarily distrust the officer, but it certainly didn’t give the man the warm welcome it had bestowed upon Horne.

3. This time she got a soft chuckle from him. The more she was around Horne, the more Claire realized she enjoyed being with the man. No, not enjoyed. It was like there was some kind of invisible magnetic force that kept drawing her back to him. That made her want to be with him. Her self-revelation surprised her. As absurd as this whole curse/spirit scenario may appear to most people, Claire was beginning to understand that not every reality was absolute. That sometimes fantasy and reality could mesh. The story of fairies existed because at some point in the past someone had actually met one. Had perhaps talked to it. Had learned of its existence, and thus the stories were born.

4. An icy blast of wind struck her from behind, but Claire didn’t care. This time the tears she shed had nothing to do with what she had discovered inside the hole hacked into the bedroom wall, and everything to do with the ragged hole left inside her heart.

5. Claire removed some of the salt from the inner space and rubbed it along the tips of her gloved fingers. “You thought you were safe from being found out, didn’t you, Oren? You thought that if the spirits couldn’t find their dead kin, then you were safe. But they got the last laugh on you, you sick bastard. They knew their friends were in here. They knew you were keeping them hostage, and they cursed you and the house anyway.”

6. Kneeling in front of her, he undid her jeans and pulled them over her thighs. He cupped her buttocks, holding her steady, and pressed his face between her legs. Claire shivered, but not from cold. There was no cold, no snow, and no wind within their protective space. She shivered from the desire filling her. From the heat of his breath along her skin, and from the sensuous kisses he was pressing against her mound. When he lightly scraped her with his teeth, she gasped and clutched his head.

Six on Sunday - HEALER OF THE HEART

Six paragraphs from one of my novels.

Today I'm spotlighting HEALER OF THE HEART, a fantasy romance novel available from Red Rose Publishing."
http://redrosepublishing.com/books/product_info.php?products_id=622

1.
At first she saw the manse as a dark and dismal place, where torches lined the walls which were covered with intricately woven tapestries and cloths. The walls themselves were constructed of thick rock, and the rooms had furniture made from massive pieces of carved wood. Yet she found she quickly grew accustomed to the place, especially her bedroom. Despite the gloominess of the hallways, the main rooms were kept brightly lit. In her own bedroom, ten tall paned windows opened up to let in air and sunslight. A fireplace graced one wall near her bed that was so big, she could have slept in there with a team of horses and never known it.

2.
Querl folded the letter as he stared out into the darkening twilight. These past weeks the nights had been filled with dreams--dreams framed in bright yellow sunscrystals and eyes as dark as a stormy sky. He felt a hunger not in his stomach, but deeper, more primitive, and much more consuming. Day or night, he fantasized how she looked beneath her robes and remembered how she felt in his arms that day he carried her to her chambers. He recalled how she looked at the banquet, sheathed in the sheerest gossamer, ethereal and achingly beautiful. It all paled in comparison to how his hands remembered every dip and curve of her waist, her hips and buttocks, and the lift of her small, perfect breasts when she'd comforted and soothed his emotional distress. His cheek echoed the heat of her body through the thick, scratchy material of her robe, and the scent that was distinctly hers.

3.
Querl angrily snapped back. "A life, any life, cannot be taken 'too seriously'. In the time she's been here, Mareesa has served you far beyond what is required of a Healer, but you've been prejudiced against her ever since the day she arrived. You've never stopped grieving for Cintas, and that's why you've never forgiven her for taking his place. Isn't that it, Uncle? Isn't that the real reason why you're willing to let her die? In the hopes that someone like Cintas will take her place? Well, Cintas is dead, too! And he won't be coming back, ever!"

4.
A sudden heat flushed Garabanth's face. The venom in his voice became unmistakable. “Since her thirteenth summer, when he came to live at the fortress, that boy has berated her, ridiculed her, harassed and tortured her. He's made her life unbearable. I cannot begin to tell you of the abuse she has suffered because of him. Her only salvation was her entry into the Healers' Circle, where she could escape him for short amounts of time. Because of him, for years Mareesa's believed herself to be unfit, unclean, and undesirable to be husbanded.”

5.
Mareesa giggled, poking him in the ribs. Stepping back, her expression changed. "Speaking of, might I suggest, kind sir, that it's time you applied a little soap and water to yourself? Another hour or two, and we could repel those advancing hordes simply by placing you upwind of them!"

6.
Later, when Patar came to tell them that Horan was doing well but would need an extra day or two to fully recover, all Querl could think of was the way Mareesa had felt in his arms so many weeks ago, and the look of absolute trust in her smoky eyes when she had awakened from her self-induced, healing coma. He had known then, without a doubt, that she would become his whole world.

New Review for BEQUEATHED!

Reviewed by Claudette, Dark Diva Reviews

This paranormal book mainly covers the mystery of why the new home that seemed like such a godsend to Claire when she inherited it was so creepy. Given that the cabin’s location is fairly isolated, Claire is shaken up to find a strange man watching her. One who keeps turning up every time she steps outside. Claire’s enigmatic stranger claims to be a neighbour, calling himself Horne. Disturbed by him and yet strangely drawn, Claire cannot put her finger on what it is about him that makes her trust him.

I really enjoyed the fact that Claire is not at all cringing or timid. She is not only curious, but also compassionate in regards to wanting to help Horne. I enjoyed both the mystery itself and the revealing of it. I don’t think Claire got to know Horne nearly well enough to take the step she makes at the end of the novel though. I would have preferred it if Claire and Horne had spent more time talking and the author had allowed the reader to see that they really gelled, before the ending.

Bequeathed by Linda G. Mooney is a very original story with a strong, bold heroine. Her sidekick cat was a great character too.

Hi. My name is Alexis Hembree, and I’m a cop. My partner and I are good at our jobs, except we don’t tend to work what others would call a “normal” beat. For some reason we draw evil to us like flies to sugar.

Sometimes there are things in this world we can’t explain or anticipate. But when they cross that line between their existence and ours, when they show up, we have to deal with them as best we can.

Some cops fight criminals. We fight something that never should have existed.

303 Lexington St.
It was a crack house. Except, in this case, drug dealers went in but they didn’t come out. Not alive, anyway, but in body bags. What’s more, if everyone who went inside ended up being shredded to death, who was doing the killing?

Georgie Porgie
The killer targeted women. Young, old, prostitutes, business women, it didn’t matter. One moment they would be walking down the sidewalk in the middle of town, and the next what was left of their bodies would be found in a nearby alleyway. Devoured. That’s why I had to be the next one to walk the streets. To draw out whoever was doing this. To be his next victim.

The Goodbye
He murdered young girls by crucifying them with ice picks. He was slick, elusive, and heading for our city. My partner and I were damned and determined this murderer would get no further. Unfortunately I couldn’t keep my head on the job. Neither could I ignore the weird-ass dreams I was having about this deviate. This case was becoming more personal, more foreboding, and more dangerous with each passing day. And there was no damn way I could avoid what I dreamed would be the final outcome.

Four years ago Byron Shales was a manager for a department store. Now he hunts down and captures the newly zombie-fied dead, and resells them at auction to the highest bidder. What his buyers do with them after the sale is finalized is none of his business, and frankly he couldn’t care less.

His beliefs and apathy come to a sickening halt when he elects to keep one young woman for himself, and discovers that all his pre-conceived notions about these non-living creatures have been a lie. In fact, the truth about Rothsburg’s Disease may be more horrifying than the flesh-eating creatures it infects.
