It all began when she found the silver charm bracelet.

As a realtor, Geraldine "Geri" Jones has been trying for years to get the property off her hands. Back in the 50s, it had been called Mabelling's, one of the first drive-in soda and burger joints in the state. But after a calamity destroyed the place and took many lives, the remaining structure had fallen into ruin.

It was while showing the location to a prospective buyer that she finds the bracelet buried between the cracks in the blackened floor tiles. What she doesn't expect is for the bracelet to transport her back to 1959. Back to the diner when it was in its heydey. There she meets Roddy "Hot Rod" Carvelle, with his tight jeans, tigher white T-shirt, and slicked back hair. A man twelve years her junior, who gives her the thrill of her life in the backseat of his baby blue Bel Air.

But the anniversary of the catastrophe that destroyed Mabelling's is fast approaching, and Geri is determined to save Roddy from his final destiny. What she doesn't realize is that she and Rodney could become two more victims of the disastrous event.

"Excuse me."

"Sorry." She automatically stepped aside to let the customer enter the restaurant, then realized the person didn't move once she'd retreated. Laurel glanced up to see a warm smile and a pair of dancing green eyes watching her. The face was instantly recognizable, as he looked exactly like his photo.

"Trent!"

He laughed as they hugged briefly. Despite its brevity, she could tell the man was in prime physical condition. Hugging him had been like hugging a marble statue, only better.

"Have you been waiting long?" he asked as they entered the restaurant.

"No. Not long."

She discovered that Trent had made reservations. They were quickly seated and left with menus. Without looking at the contents, they both set the menus aside, then realized what they'd done, bringing about more laughter.

"I take it you come here frequently?" Trent asked.

"As frequently as time and my bank account will allow," Laurel said. In the soft glare of the candlelight on the table between them, she was amazed by how handsome the man was. It brought a fresh wave of fear and self-doubt, and she wondered how the date would end. The photo she'd sent him had been done at one of those makeup studios that glamorize the customer before taking pictures. Tonight, she looked nothing like that photo. If anything, after a hard day at work, she probably looked even less like her usual self.

How did Trent feel about dating homely looking women?

"What?"

"Huh?"

He brushed at something on his cheek. There was just the right amount of early evening shadow covering his lower face. It made him appear even more studly, if that was possible. He flashed her an uncomfortable grin. "You were staring at my face like I had something on it."

"Oh, I'm sorry. I was..." She gave an embarrassed giggle. "I was marveling at how much you look just like your picture."

"So do you."

She instantly dismissed it. "No, I don't. That photo was taken last year, and I had three people work on me for an hour in order to look like that. Trust me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime photo shoot."

To her surprise, he reached over and covered her hand that was nervously fingering the stem of her empty wine glass. "Trust me, Laurel. You look exactly like your photo, especially in this light. Your face glows, and you have the most incredible blue eyes I've ever seen. In fact, right this minute, I prefer the way you look now, with your dark hair disheveled and the bright spots of color on your cheek. You look real and natural. Makes me think this is the way you'd appear when you first get up in the morning."

The shock of his statement washed through her, leaving her speechless. His honesty was irrefutable. Before she could respond, they were interrupted by the waiter arriving to take their order. Once he left, Laurel opened her napkin to give her time to think up a response. Finally, the best one seemed to be the simplest one.

"Thank you."

Trent grinned. Or rather, one corner of his mouth turned upward. "I take it you're not accustomed to being complimented."

"N-no. Yelled at, yes. Ordered about, yes. But kind words?" She gave a weak shrug. She started to reach for her water glass when she stopped. The water's surface was quivering. Trent looked down to see what held her attention.

"What?"

"The water," she told him. "Look. It's moving."

"It's just a small earthquake," he smiled. "We get tremors like this all the time. Are you new to California?"

Laurel shook her head. "No. It's just that something like that is often a precursor to a bigger one."

Trent's smile widened. "Don't worry. I'll make sure nothing happens to you."

The sound of sirens overrode the restaurant's music, and several emergency vehicles sped by. At the same time a beeping noise came from Trent's watch. He glanced at it and frowned.

"Oh, jeez. They would call me in."

"They?"

"Uhh, my bosses. They probably want me to follow that fire truck and see if I can lend a hand. I told them this was my night off, but does that matter? Excuse me for a moment." He pulled his cell phone from out of his pants pocket and punched a number. "Yes. Uh-huh. Over on the north side, near Blaylock. Got it. Look, I'm tied up at the moment, but I'll get over there as soon as I can. Uh-huh. Okay. Okay. 'Bye."

"Is it serious?" she finally ventured to ask.

"Apparently a gas line ruptured during the tremor. Came up through the street and caused a pile-up. Police are on the scene, and ambulance and fire department are on their way."

"Think The Champion will show up?"

Trent grinned again. "You never know. This is just the sort of thing a superhero like The Champion is good at. Saving the world one person at a time."

Realizing Trent was staying a while longer, Laurel reached over to the basket just delivered onto the table and grabbed a breadstick. "Can you imagine what real life might be like for a person like The Champion?"

"What? You mean private life?"

"Any sort of life outside of fighting crime and all."

"Gee, I never of thought of it, but I'd guess it would be pretty bleak. I mean, you'd have to be like Superman and have a secret identity just so you could have friends and go out on a date." He winced. "A love life would be very dangerous for your partner, which would mean your sex life would pretty much suck."

"Wouldn't you think that after a while, though, the loneliness and emptiness would get to be too unbearable?" she wondered aloud.

"Oh, yeah. I've no doubt it would." He laughed so softly she almost didn't hear it. "Wouldn't it be funny if The Champion turned to a dating service like the one we did?"

"Actually, I think it might be a perfect solution. Using the dating service to find someone who is so much like you that when a call goes out for The Champion to help, the other person understands and waits for you without question or reservation."

"It would be a dream come true, in a way." He continued to stare out the front window.

Laurel noticed how antsy he was quickly becoming. "Trent, listen, if you have to leave to go tend to that accident, I understand."

"No. No, I promised you a nice dinner at a restaurant, and I'm a man of my word. The emergency crews can get along without me." He started to say more, when her own phone went off. Rather than answer it, she took note of the number, then put the cell on vibrate and stuck it back in her purse.

"Aren't you going to answer it?" he asked.

"No. I know who it is, and I can probably guess what he wants. I'll call him back later."

"What was that ring tone? It sounded familiar."

"'Fly Me to the Moon'. It was a Sinatra hit many years ago," she said.

"Ah, right. Now I remember it. Odd that it would be your choice."

"Why?"

"My default ring is 'Come Fly With Me'."

"Really? Why that one?"

"Because I have a love of flying, just like you do."

Laurel smiled as she took a sip of water. She was comfortable with the guy even in person. Their easy banter came so naturally, it was refreshing.

He could be the one. My own personal superhero. My lifesaver. The possibility made her heart speed up, and she could feel the heat building between her legs.

Six on Sunday - FROM OUT OF THE SHADOWS

Six paragraphs from From Out of the Shadows
An erotic fantasy romance novel

Croat was a Lupan, one of the half-man, half-beast creatures long thought to be extinct or fabricated from fairy tales. Lupan were folklore, nothing more than a myth.

Tora was a Sensitive. Her kind really existed, and normal people feared Sensitives because it was common knowledge that all Sensitives were evil and practiced the dark magicks.

Captured and thrown together inside Baron Agrino’s dungeon, they discovered a connection between them that defied all reason, and a love that transcended all boundaries.

But is their love strong enough to stop the baron from what he’ll do with every Lupan he plans to capture? Or, worse, what he’ll do with Tora once he learns what she is?

* * * * *
1. The last armed man gave the still figure a final kick before he left, locking the door behind him. With the only source of light gone, the cell once again grew pitch black. Her quiet world shifted back into place—only now she was sharing it with another person. A person who had been beaten nearly to death. From where she sat, Tora could hear the poor man’s labored breathing. Every few seconds he would groan in pain. Her heart went out to him.

2. The baron’s men advanced toward them, rifles ready as they proceeded to ring the couple. Someone ordered for a net to be brought, and one pair of boots disappeared from Croat’s line of vision. At the sound of a gun being cocked, he flattened his ears against his head and bared his bloody fangs. A growl of hatred reverberated in his throat as he raised his head to stare at them. To dare them; to threaten them. He could feel Tora quaking beneath him as they both waited for the inevitable to happen.

3. “I hear her screaming in my head,” he gasped, fighting the terror and agony he was receiving from her. “I can feel my hands, like they’ve been covered in fire.” Looking up at the elderly woman, Croat said, “For a moment there, I was free of her. I think she was unconscious, but it was like whatever cord was running between us had been cut. I was finally free of her…and it was a feeling I never want to feel again.”

4. His touch was overwhelming. At no time had her mother explained that a connection between a Sensitive and her life partner would become a two-way thing. At that moment, when it was taking all of her strength to keep herself conscious, it was Croat who was feeding her with his own emotional power, helping her survive; making her feel alive and sane. His body was like the sun, pouring warmth and energy into every dark crevasse in her withered psyche. It signaled a promise, beckoning and pleading for her to relent in order for him to claim her. She could feel herself trying to answer his silent, primitive call. It was a call she couldn’t explain or identify, yet she realized it was provoking something new from her. A new and different kind of feeling she’d never experienced before in her life.

5. “When a Sensitive touches the one who will become her lifelong partner, that connection forms. She has no warning it will happen, and neither does he. But when it does, that connection is what bonds them together for life. But a regular Sensitive’s bond with her husband, although it is lifelong, does weaken as the distance between them grows, should the two become separated.” Deelaht gently shook her head. “Not so for a Beginner. Be it a mile, or a hundred miles, you will be as aware of her as she will be of you, just as if you were standing next to each other.” She bit her lower lip then added, “And anything that happens to either of you will be felt by the other just as strongly.”

6. She stood before them, hands curled into fists at the end of ramrod-straight arms pressed by her sides. “We’re a game to the baron. We’re an exciting hunt on a boring afternoon. He has been taking men, women, and children from the surrounding villages on a regular basis and doing gods know what with them. Do you honestly believe, now that he knows you really exist, that he’s not going to put every man he can on your trail to try and find you? Dearest heavens, you were a myth! When normal people find out the myth is real, can you imagine the terror he could incite? They nearly killed Croat, and tried to make him feed on me because the baron knows how invincible he’ll be if he has a whole army of Lupan.”

Six on Sunday - BEQUEATHED

6 Paragraphs from BEQUEATHED
An erotic fantasy romance
Available from Red Rose Publishing
http://redrosepublishing.com/books/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=265&products_id=933

1. “Hey, Mike. What should we do today? Want to go down to the lake and see if we can catch tonight‘s dinner?” She grabbed a clean bowl from the dish drainer and poured some kibbles into it. “Here go you, old man,” she said, bending down and placing it on the floor where she wouldn’t accidentally step on it. Straightening up, she looked back at the cat, and her heart leaped into her throat as the dark shadow vanished from behind the window. Her first reaction was immediately replaced with indignant anger.

2. “You’ve heard it, too?” She glanced around the living area, seeing it now from a whole new perspective. “How? You mean it’s haunted?” Tendrils of fear crawled up inside her stomach and threatened to chill her from the inside out, until she caught sight of Mike casually make his way across the living room floor as he headed toward the kitchen. The cat’s nonchalant manner reminded her of how the animal had reacted - or rather, hadn’t reacted - around Horne. In fact, the Bengal gave the deputy a wide berth as it sought out its breakfast. The cat didn’t necessarily distrust the officer, but it certainly didn’t give the man the warm welcome it had bestowed upon Horne.

3. This time she got a soft chuckle from him. The more she was around Horne, the more Claire realized she enjoyed being with the man. No, not enjoyed. It was like there was some kind of invisible magnetic force that kept drawing her back to him. That made her want to be with him. Her self-revelation surprised her. As absurd as this whole curse/spirit scenario may appear to most people, Claire was beginning to understand that not every reality was absolute. That sometimes fantasy and reality could mesh. The story of fairies existed because at some point in the past someone had actually met one. Had perhaps talked to it. Had learned of its existence, and thus the stories were born.

4. An icy blast of wind struck her from behind, but Claire didn’t care. This time the tears she shed had nothing to do with what she had discovered inside the hole hacked into the bedroom wall, and everything to do with the ragged hole left inside her heart.

5. Claire removed some of the salt from the inner space and rubbed it along the tips of her gloved fingers. “You thought you were safe from being found out, didn’t you, Oren? You thought that if the spirits couldn’t find their dead kin, then you were safe. But they got the last laugh on you, you sick bastard. They knew their friends were in here. They knew you were keeping them hostage, and they cursed you and the house anyway.”

6. Kneeling in front of her, he undid her jeans and pulled them over her thighs. He cupped her buttocks, holding her steady, and pressed his face between her legs. Claire shivered, but not from cold. There was no cold, no snow, and no wind within their protective space. She shivered from the desire filling her. From the heat of his breath along her skin, and from the sensuous kisses he was pressing against her mound. When he lightly scraped her with his teeth, she gasped and clutched his head.
