ONE BATTLE LORD'S FATE, Book 4

On their first anniversary, Yulen is making plans to surprise Atty with a celebration unlike anything she's ever experienced.  All of Alta Novis is preparing to honor their Battle Lord and Lady with pomp and pageantry never before seen.

Before the week is over, Rafe D'Jacques will become the new Battle Lord of Alta Novis, even if he has to kill his half-brother to own it. And Atty... Well, everyone knows that the only good Mutah is a dead Mutah.

THIS BATTLE LORD'S QUEST, Book 5

The last time Yulen spoke to her, Atty was heading east, along with Fortune Kalich and several other hunters. With the latest onslaught of Bloods gone, so was the game, until there was little left to hunt to feed the growing population of Alta Novis. Since very few hunters went east, they figured it might yield good results. She planned to be gone four or five days at the most, a week tops, and promised to return with good news.

That was, until Fortune returned without Atty.

EVERY BATTLE LORD'S NIGHTMARE, Book 6

Determined in his quest to bring peace between Normal and Mutah compounds, Yulen D'Jacques accepts an invitation for him and Atty to attend a summit conference in the distant westerly province of Corado.

What follows is a harrowing experience of deceit and revenge served cold. And it soon becomes clear to Yulen and Atty that they will not survive this treachery.

A life for a life. When one is gone, another is promised to take its place.

Unexpected visitors with an invitation to a horse sale and auction from an unknown battle lord piques Yulen D’Jacques’ interest. The opportunity to renew their horses’ bloodlines is too good to pass up, although he knows the trek will be long and dangerous.

Yulen worries Atty isn’t yet up to the trip, but she refuses to let him go without her, even if that means leaving the children behind. The decision is a hard one, but they won’t risk Mattox and Mistelle’s lives along with their own. Although Bloods are still a threat, along with any number of other creatures, they plan to make a few stops and hopefully pick up some allies along the way, both Mutah and Normal.

The scenes they stumble upon along the way are vicious. Entire settlements have been slaughtered, soldiers mutilated. And just when the group think they’ve made it to the safety of the compound for the sale, they learn that Normals can be more brutal than Bloods. The new battle lord is anti-Mutah, and when his plot to take advantage of his visitors comes to light, Yulen won’t stand for it.

Ghosts from Yulen’s past also resurface, bringing a secret to light. Can Yulen and Atty work through it? Will he be able to step up and do what’s right? Of course he will. It’s what a good battle lord would do. And it’s time to teach everyone else that lesson.

Warning! Contains lessons in swordplay, a bet, deliciously prepared lizard, blame, lessons in cookie dunking, rigged games, blood and Bloods, and a love sorely tried that grows and becomes stronger.

Six on Sunday - ANOTHER BATTLE LORD'S FURY, The Battle Lord Saga, Book 11

Six on Sunday - Six paragraphs from ANOTHER BATTLE LORD'S FURY, The Battle Lord Saga, Book 11

1. Loseph Gaddy took the lead as they continued down the road. Atty rode a bit behind and to the side of him, with Paxton next to her. Although he and Atty assured the others that the Bloods had moved on—and they both were certain it was Bloods they’d sensed—everyone remained battle ready just in case. No one tried to convince themselves that it hadn’t been anything other than Bloods, least of all Yulen D’Jacques. He’d seen Atty’s survival instincts kick in when they’d encountered other creatures and when they’d been accosted by Bloods. With the creatures, she remained awake and focused as she inwardly tracked their movements. But with the Bloods, her focus turned away from the present. She became almost trance-like but was somehow still aware of her present surroundings.

2. “No, but the next wave of Bloods who come through here will investigate, and they’ll spread the word if they find things have been rearranged. That will give them reason to rejoice and celebrate.” She eyed everyone in the room. “Their whole purpose in life is to destroy Normals and Mutah, and that includes creating as much fear as possible.” She swept her arms outward. “All of this is more than overcoming this settlement. It’s meant to have us fear them, and loathe them, and make it fuel our anger toward them because they believe that if they can conquer us mentally…” She tapped her temple. “And emotionally…” She placed a fist over her heart. “Then they know they’ve won half the battle. And we all know fear is a greater enemy than a physical presence.”

3. “You’ve put the fear into them, that’s why,” Batuset announced. “You’ve survived being skinned alive by them, and Atty took out one of their major leaders when she was eight months pregnant. You two beat them to the point where they’re envious, and angry, and leery of you. Word’s gotten out about the battle lord and lady of Alta Novis who fly the half-blue and half-red standard. They’ve been warned not to cross you or else they’ll end up dead. They’ve been told to avoid any conflict wherever they see that flag.”

4. “In the past, whenever we made love, I was able to hope that that moment would create a new life within me.” She gave a weak chuckle. “Oh, I admit that before I had Mattox, I was terrified about getting pregnant. After believing for so long that losing my virginity would signal the end of my hunting abilities, I’d transferred that fear to when I had children. But after I had our son, I realized he’d made me stronger, especially when I discovered I had an innate connection with him, similar to the way I’m connected to you. Which was why I no longer had that fear. In fact, I was looking forward to becoming a mother again. I was thrilled when I got pregnant and had Mistelle. But then, after I got pregnant again, and the rats came…”

5. They could hear the shouting and fighting before they reached the section of wall where the Mutah had initially sensed the presence of Bloods. Already he could tell the guards along the parapet were having difficulty fighting off the creatures. Grabbing the first ladder he came to, the battle lord scurried up to the parapet in time to see a Blood hoisting itself over the top of the wall. Drawing his sword, he swung it with one hand. The blade bit into the thing’s neck, and the creature went flying backwards. Another Blood took its place and tried to climb over. By this time, Yulen had reached the catwalk and could wield his weapon with both hands, lunging and slashing at the invading horde. He was aware of Atty to his left firing her arrows in rapid succession, taking down one, sometimes two Bloods with each shaft.

6. Talco began pacing as he feverishly sought answers. “He also has to be the reason why all those battle lords suddenly packed up and left at first light the next morning, before the sale and auction were done. That man deliberately sabotaged my event out of sheer pettiness!” He snorted. “I should have known better than to try and trust a man who is thick with Mutah and Bloods. If he couldn’t have them conquer me from the outside, he decided to undermine me from the inside!” He slammed a fist into his palm. “D’Jacques can’t be allowed to get away with this. He will pay for his treachery, if he and his mongrel bitch haven’t already become victims of the Bloods by now. But if by chance he managed to make it back to his compound in one piece, perhaps it’s time I led a small battalion to his front gates and proved to him he crossed with the wrong man. And as for Cuttle… Newberry!”

When a caravan of gypsies arrives at Alta Novis, looking to make a deal, these new visitors raise suspicions. It isn’t until the battle lord sees what they have for sell that his concerns and reservations are raised even more—a cannon, guns, and other weapons that haven’t been seen in hundreds of years, and only heard about in stories these days.

The group isn’t happy when Yulen denies their requests, confiscates their weapons, and sends them on their way, but not before loading their wagons with supplies in a show of good will. But it isn’t enough for the gypsy leader.

When one of their own goes missing, Yulen and Atty will stop at nothing to get the battle prince back, but at what cost? Do their swords and arrows stand a chance against guns?

A number of obstacles stand in their way as they go to retrieve their son, but the connection between a Mutah mother and her child will conquer all.

Warning! Contains figgy pastries, a human trade, mutant bears, screamer arrows, raging hormones, coffee, shaved chocolate, weather colder than a well digger's butt, a parent's worst nightmare, and a son's ultimate revenge.

Six on Sunday - MY BATTLE LORD'S PASSION, The Battle Lord Saga, Book 9

Six paragraphs from MY BATTLE LORD'S PASSION, The Battle Lord Saga, Book 9.

1. “Because Mattox just killed one that had managed to get inside Misty’s crib.” The battle lord held up his hand, fingers spread. “Damn thing was as big as my hand. Fortunately he managed to plunge a knife into it before it reached her. I dread to think what kind of bite that thing must have.” A shudder went through him at the thought of the creature feasting on his daughter.

2. “No, it hasn’t, because Atty never came into my life here. Or, if she had, the other me was too enmeshed in his hatred of all things Mutah that he overlooked her. It was due in part to Liam’s guidance that she and I…” He raked his fingers through his hair. “I guess, when Liam died, that’s when all that changed. That’s where my present and this present split, like a fork in the road.”

3.  “My real reason for coming down here is two-fold. I intend to free you. Hopefully. Eventually. But it has to be done in a way that will not cause any problems with my people. Tosh Karv is on the verge of trying to overthrow me, and claim Alta Novis as his. If he succeeds…you know his first order of business will be to have you all killed. Which is why this has to be done gradually. Unfortunately, I won’t have a lot of time do what I hope to do. I’m going to have to go back to those caverns in a few days. I’m going to go back with the announced intent of making sure we’ve eradicated the spiders, or at least caused enough damage to prevent them from invading us and other compounds in the future.

4. D’Jacques sat back in the chair and let out a big sigh. “At first, when they started telling me their stories, I thought it was to educate me. Like I was someone who’d been in a deep coma, and they needed to bring me up to speed on what’s been happening while I was out of it. Then, after a while, they weren’t so much as trying to reeducate me as it had turned into some sort of grand party. We were a bunch of guys sitting around a table, in front of a fire, sipping our ales and beers. We were reminiscing about the good times, and the bad times, and the times when it seemed all hope was lost until Atty and I brought everyone through the fire.” He studied the man who was studying him. “Liam, in my present, I never met Atty. After we torched that compound and rounded up those Mutah who looked decent enough not to upset my people here, we came back home. We held your funeral, and I’ve never stopped grieving over your loss. You were…are my surrogate father.”

5. Atty wrapped her arms herself as she kept a smile pasted on her face. She wasn’t cold, but she felt no warmth. Every word he spoke, and every gesture he made confirmed him to be Yulen D’Jacques. He wasn’t her Yulen, but he was. He was everything her Yulen was, but without the scars or the experiences they’d endured and survived. And she knew his body intimately. His love filled her veins. Their passion flowed through her bloodstream. She couldn’t breathe without him, yet somehow her body was managing to get by without his presence pillowing her heart. She was surviving, but she wasn’t alive.

6. Atty sighed and walked away. He watched her head back to where the caulking was being mixed. For a second he almost called out to her, reached out to her. By some miracle he stopped himself short. Yes, she was Atty, but not his Atty. To him, any attempt to touch her, hold her, or kiss her would be a betrayal to his wife.

The battle lord and lady of Alta Novis are still recovering from disease and loss, but things are slowly getting back to normal. Of course, things can’t be that easy. There’s a new enemy in town, of the eight-legged variety—an infestation of them. The species is a new one, and it's unknown how dangerous they are, but Yulen isn’t going to take any risks to find out.

With a plan in motion, Yulen and a small army of men set out to track down the giant creatures, finding their nest in a cave. He and his crew waste no time going in to burn out the egg sacs, but when Yulen emerges from the flaming caverns, he finds himself…in the past? At least, he believes so when he sees the figure of a long-dead adversary.

Somehow, a twist of fate has switched Yulen with a different version of himself. With the monstrous Yulen. The way he was before Atty. Before love. Before his acceptance of the Mutah. Realizing the other D’Jacques could be with his Atty, the reformed Yulen is seeing what his life would be like if she'd never come along. Now he must figure out how to get back to his own present. But before he does, he knows he has to bring this alternate timeline back up to speed with his own thriving world.

Parallel lives, parallel realities, but totally different people and circumstances. Sometimes you learn a lot about yourself from experiences that you never knew possible, and it alters the course of your future for the better.

Six on Sunday - HIS BATTLE LORD'S CURSE, The Battle Lord Saga, Book 8

Six paragraphs from HIS BATTLE LORD'S CURSE, The Battle Lord Saga, Book 8.

1. Instead of answering, he bent his head toward her again, but instead of kissing her, he nuzzled her cheek. His body stiffened for a second. The next instant, his mouth took full possession of hers. Overwhelmed by his sudden passion, she melted against him, her head whirling from the power of his kiss. When they finally broke apart, both of them were gasping for breath.

2. The hairs went up on the back of Yulen’s neck. “Julepto’s right. No one travels between compounds without a weapon. Not even Mutah. They always have a hunter or two with them for protection, and to bring down prey along the way to eat, so they can stretch their stores a bit farther. And hunters never put their weapons out of sight.” He had Atty to thank for that last bit of wisdom. Even when she wasn’t using her bow or knife, they were always within easy reach, just in case.

3. Seeing the effect his declaration had on the two Mutah, Flay nodded, his smile widening. “If you lay a hand on me, I will place a curse upon your heads. Harm me, and I will bring illness to everyone you hold dear.” Staring directly at Yulen, he finished with one more prediction. “Deny me what I demand, and I will bring death to your door.”

4.  Atty grabbed her reins with one hand and urged her mare to follow, when something slammed into both her and the horse. She went flying across the clearing, hitting the ground on her side before rolling to a stop. She barely had the chance to get to her feet as a monstrous, larger third bear came charging toward her from the opposite side of the clearing. The horse bolted in stark fear, barely missing being struck again by those massive paws.

5. “Before we go any further, I’m letting you know the man who calls himself Flay is currently here in the compound.” Their reaction was immediate as their fear took hold of them. A couple got up, as if to flee the room, but they were detained by others who grabbed them by the arm or jacket. Holding up his hands, Yulen quickly added, “You have no reason to worry. He’s in custody where he can’t escape. Not him or any of his men.”

6. The battle lord gathered up the map, folding it before stuffing it back into the saddlebag. “That makes more sense to me. The foretelling part. And if that’s the case, we need to find that son of a bitch and make him tell us what else he’s foreseen. And after he does, we kill him. No mercy, no quarter. If he foresaw all those innocent deaths and did nothing to warn us, but instead chose to take credit for them, then he deserves the same fate.”

Things seem to have settled down among the people of Alta Novis. Normals and Mutah are working together, and families are thriving. The compound is filled to capacity and brimming with new life, but their good fortune can only last for so long.

Winter is setting in, and the surrounding countryside is being plagued by unexpected swarms of wild animals. In addition, a horde of rats is contaminating the food supplies and destroying goods, but why? Where are all these creatures coming from? And why is it happening now? A curse that threatens to take away all Yulen D’Jacques holds dear.

The Battle Lord finds himself at odds between fact and fiction, but he’ll stop at nothing to save his family, as well as his dynasty. But sometimes the real enemy can’t be seen, making it an almost impossible battle to fight, much less win.

Welcome to the Science Fiction Romance Brigade Midsummer Blog Hop!

Starry Nights
(A vignette from the Battle Lord Saga.)
by Linda Mooney

They were half a day's journey from reaching Alta Novis. Lying on her back, Atty could hear her husband caring for the small cooking fire they'd made, keeping it fed to prevent them from becoming chilled before sunrise. A smile curved her lips. Fat chance of that happening. The first thing Yulen would do when he joined her in the bedroll would be to gather her in his arms and spoon himself around her.
It wasn't long before the battle lord made his way to where she lay. Removing his weapons belt, he placed it on the ground, next to the bedroll, where he could easily reach it if something threatened them. Ditching his boots, he crawled inside. Strong arms slid around her waist, and slowly she was pulled into his embrace. A mouth nuzzled behind her ear. "You're unusually quiet tonight," he murmured, then placed a kiss on her earlobe.
"I'm watching the sky," Atty whispered.
            "Oh?"
Lifting an arm, she pointed toward a cluster of bright spots almost directly overhead. "It's hard to believe those are suns."
"That's what I was taught, as well. We can't feel their warmth because they're too far away, but we can still see their light."
"I know that," she teasingly admonished him. "But I would rather think of them as the souls of those who have died, the way some ancient cultures used to believe."
"Hmm. Haven't heard that one. So, everyone who dies becomes a star?"
"Yeah. The story says when you die, your soul enters the heavens, and that's why there's so many stars."
"Does it also explain why some stars are brighter than others?"
One hand was creeping across her waist, and fingers dipped between her belly and pants. Already he was playfully attacking the soft nest between her legs. Atty smiled again to herself. "You're making it difficult to think," she accused.
            "Want me to stop?"
She gave a slight shake of her head. "No. And your other answer is yes."
"Yes, what? I'm sorry. I'm having difficulty concentrating on what you're talking about."
The fingers dipped lower, lightly scratching her skin with his blunt nails as he neared the juncture between her legs. In addition, his other hand had found one breast, and was slowly massaging it while gently pinching the nipple. Atty could feel the warmth of his body warming her in ways that would soon drive them both into a frenzy.
"I said yes, there is a reason why some stars are brighter than others. It has to do with your deeds. How you behaved during your life here on earth."
"Mmm, so the better the deed, the brighter the star?" His lips brushed her shoulder as he adjusted himself behind her, until Atty could feel his erection nudging between her thighs.
            "Yeah. Something like that."
She was on the verge of turning over and pulling him on top of her when his caresses suddenly stopped. With the fire a few feet behind him, she couldn't make out his facial expression, but she could tell he was gazing upward.
            "What?" she prodded softly.
            "Oh, nothing."
            "Yulen, what are you thinking?"
After another moment of silence, he lowered his face to kiss her. "I'm thinking that maybe, perhaps maybe, might it be possible our stars will be close together when we die? It would be a great comfort to me if I knew you were there beside me for all of eternity."
Rolling onto her hip so that she face him, Atty placed a hand on his scarred cheek. Yulen dropped his gaze to the shadow that was his wife.
"Yulen, I have no doubt whatsoever that not only will we be placed close together in the heavens when we die, but that we may be two of the brightest stars up there."
His chuckle rumbled in his chest. "You think?"
"We can only hope," Atty commented.  "As long as we can be together, or within sight of each other, spending eternity in the heavens does not frighten me."
Taking one last glimpse of the night sky, Yulen moved over her, blocking her sight as he sought her lips. "Neither does it frighten me, Atrilan. And I would not be surprised if your star had a slightly blue-ish tint to it."
The remark took her by surprise, and she started to laugh, but Yulen had already begun his assault on her senses. Let us be the stars in the heavens. Let us be together forever, she silently prayed, and surrendered to her husband's desires.

A Battle Lord Conundrum - Should I or Shouldn't I?

Back in 2006 when I wrote the first book of the Battle Lord Saga, The Battle Lord's Lady, I had initially intended to have at least four books in the series. Two more books later, in 2007, I knew I wanted to continue Atty and Yulen's story through their children. I even knew their names, their "uniquenesses", and I had rough drafts of their stories. But I also knew I couldn't call them the Battle Lord Saga. That title was exclusively for Atty and Yulen.

Thus, I created:

The logo is a work in progress, but can you see my problem?

Not yet?

Well, how about if I add this?

Now do you see my problem?

Never in a million years could I anticipate this. In many ways, it's funny. But my question is this, and I'm asking for some feedback.

Should I continue to use the D'Jacques Dynasty idea and series name for Mattox, Mistelle, and Lucien D'Jacques? And risk people saying I ripped off the name from a TV series? (I actually got the idea from a History Channel show on the Chinese Ming Dynasty. I've even used the D'Jacques Dynasty term in my books.) Or should I drop the idea and try to come up with a new series title?

The last time Yulen spoke to her, Atty was heading east, along with Fortune Kalich and several other hunters. With the latest onslaught of Bloods gone, so was the game, until there was little left to hunt to feed the growing population of Alta Novis. Since very few hunters went east, they figured it might yield good results. She planned to be gone four or five days at the most, a week tops, and promised to return with good news.

That was, until Fortune returned without Atty.

Worried and frightened, the Battle Lord, along with a handful of volunteers, go in search of the Battle Lady. They pray they'll find her alive. Either way, they are determined not to return to the compound without knowing the truth.

What they discover will change their world forever.
