The D'Jacques Dynasty, Book 3
Futuristic/Post-Apocalyptic Romance
Word Count: 61.4 K

Narrated by Owen Samuels
Length: 5 hrs, 22 min

Every five years, Yulen D’Jacques, Battle Lord of Alta Novis, holds a conference to continue strengthening relations between the Normals and Mutah. Both battle lords and Mutah councilmembers from far and wide are invited in an effort to prove how important they could be to each other, and to dismiss any misconceptions Normals may still have toward the people they once considered their inferior enemies.

This time, it’s determined Mattox D’Jacques, Battle Prince of Alta Novis, should take on some of the responsibilities of running the conference. After all, he eventually will be the one to take the reins from his parents, but his Mutah “tell” usually scares people off rather than gains him respect.

Caralas Edge is the battle princess of Vega City, the biggest compound in the west. But she doesn’t want to just be a princess, and have someone coddling her because of her title. She can hold her own. It’s moot anyway. She knows she’ll never take over Vega City, fearing someone wants to get her father out of the way so they can claim it for themselves. She’s long had her suspicions, but her father will hear none of it.

She and Mattox clash like two swords when they first meet. They’re too much alike in temperament. But when the red-eyed battle prince saves Caralas’ life, they discover the danger is not over. It seems someone is interested in the inner workings of the compound, and it’s more than a little suspicious. But who? With this many battle lords in attendance, trouble is sure to be found.

A possible takeover is brewing, but everyone is completely taken off guard when faced with an enemy no one can fight off. And when it becomes a battle to the death, Mattox and Caralas discover a deeper connection between them than they ever thought possible.

Warning! Contains flying weapons, tasty grilled snake, massive troop deployment, head-butting, the destruction of a compound, treachery and deceptions, and a deadly force of nature that makes two people realize they need each other physically and emotionally in order to survive.

Six on Sunday - MATTOX, The D'Jacques Dynasty, Book 3, a Futuristic, Post-Apocalyptic, Sci-Fi Romance

Six paragraphs from MATTOX, The D'Jacques Dynasty, Book 3.

1.  That last pushed him off the thin line he’d been walking. Mattox parked his hands on his hips, forcing himself not to grab the hilt of his sword. To do so would be seen as a threat. “Since you didn’t ask, allow me to introduce myself. I am Mattox D’Jacques, Battle Prince of Alta Novis, and I’m not asking you anymore to leave my family’s table. I’m giving you and your groupies to the count of five to get up and move. One.”

2. She tilted her head in a way that told him she was waiting for his attention. Atty wore a smile he knew so well. She had a way of reading him that initially used to annoy him when he was younger. Now it was a precious link he felt blessed to have with her. Even though he sometimes believed she could almost read his mind, he knew she couldn’t. But there was an emotional connection between them. A connection he shared also with his two siblings. A connection that let her know, as in this case, when something was bothering him. She’d probably felt it before he’d joined them at the table, but had chosen not to say anything until he brought it up, or she felt compelled to. It was turning out to be the latter.

3. “No, Father. That’s not the only reason.” Caralas placed her hand on his arm again. Thankfully, he didn’t jerk away from her this time. “I wanted to come with you to make sure nothing happens to you. Call me crazy. Tell me my head is full of conspiracy theories. I don’t care. What I care about is you. And if me coming along with you to this conference prevents Tanger or any of his men from trying to pull a fast one on you, then it’ll be worth it.” She gave him a loving smile. “I’m not a little girl anymore. In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve grown up, and I can hold my own when it comes to swordplay. I’m not going to let anything happen to you. Not as long as I’m around to watch your back.”

4. Reaching the second gate which separated the main part of the compound from the smaller, adjacent one, he passed through, still ignoring the hails from the soldiers and others who spotted him. No one said anything about him not returning their well wishes. They were used to his temperament, and brushed it off, especially when he wore that bright, red-eyed glare, and knew they were not the cause of his anger. Long ago, the populace had learned that whenever the battle prince was in a fit, he took it out on no one. Instead, he usually went to the practice field and vented on one of the poor dummies.

5. “Believe it or not, at this moment this storm is providing you with ample security. The wind gusts are picking up, and becoming more frequent and unexpected. Any shot he tries could be blown off-course at the last second, and the chance of him hitting someone else and perhaps killing them would blow his entire plan of doing it covertly. It would out the fact to the rest of us that there’s a hit man in our midst, and that’s the last thing he wants, or the battle lord who hired him wants, because then everyone will become suspicious of everyone else. They’ll be on their guard, second-guessing every stranger, which’ll make the chance of him getting away with anything drop to near zero. I’m guessing he’s given up for now, and plans to resume once the storm’s passed.” He reached out, unaware of his hand clasping her arm until he felt his fingers close around it. The contact sent sweet ripples through him, and he nearly broke eye contact. “Just stay alert, and always keep yourself guarded.”

6. “I usually sleep in the barracks, along with the other unmarried soldiers, but sections of it are too damaged. So we’re having to find other accommodations. Luckily, the townspeople are happy to open up their homes.” He stared into those chocolate brown depths, and deeper, where her emotions and true intent lay. When she reached out to place her hand on his chest, he felt its warmth all the way to his core. Placing his own hand over it, he watched as she stepped closer and lifted her mouth for him to kiss.

As the youngest Battle Prince, Lucien D'Jacques is discouraged because the affinities with weapons that his siblings have shown aren't showing up in him. Being half-Mutah, that little something extra should be a given, but he's no better than the average Normal soldier.

Meanwhile, the Damaged are back and slowly taking over. After receiving word that neighboring compounds are suffering, Lucien is tapped by his parents, Yulen and Atty, the Battle Lord and Lady of Alta Novis, to accompany them on a rescue mission to Green River. Now would be a great time for those specialties to shine, especially after he encounters another half-Mutah warrior huntress named Johna, whose eyes can look deep into his soul.

When fighting an invisible enemy, it's almost impossible to tell who is friend or foe. But if left unchecked, that enemy could wipe out all Mutah. It's up to the D'Jacques, with the help of their army and newfound allies, to defeat the Bloods and stop the spread of the maddening disease before it's too late.

Warning! Contains sneezing, tainted blood, mutant insects, rabid bats, a diabolical plan, a fake battle lord, a haunted compound, and one man trying to prove himself, as well as protect the woman he's come to love, as they struggle to survive.

Six on Sunday - MISTELLE, The D'Jacques Dynasty, Book 2, a Futuristic/Post-Apocalyptic Romance

Six on Sunday

Six paragraphs from MISTELLE, The D'Jacques Dynasty, Book 2, a futuristic, post-apocalyptic romance.

1. Mistelle observed her father introduce his wife to the delegation just as Mattox came inside via the large double doors in front. He went up to stand by Yulen’s side, directly behind Mastin. A few of the delegates visibly reacted upon seeing her brother’s dark red eyes. Most newcomers usually did. Some even whispered under their breaths that the oldest D’Jacques son had to be more demon than Mutah, but the family was used to the slurs.

2.  Her mind wandered back to past escapades. To times when she’d been a young girl, and strangers new to Alta Novis had approached her. Normally, the other children in the compound steered clear of her. Not so much because she was the battle lord’s daughter, but because once any of the newcomers discovered her Mutah secret, she had two brothers who were instantly there to defend and protect her. As a result, she’d had some interaction with other boys and men, but nothing ever became of it.

3.  “Father?” Mattox spoke up from where he stood guard against the front door. Yulen gave him a nod to continue. “Lucien and I went to visit with Cullum’s soldiers after we showed them where they could bunk down. Those men are loyal and stalwart, but there’s something about them I just don’t like.” He touched the side of his eye. “They’re too twitchy.”

4. Going to the rear door at the end of the hallway, she unlocked it and slipped outside into the warm night air. Nevo was a dark shape waiting for her in the shadows by the wall. The nearest sentry was several yards away as he walked the parapet twenty-plus feet above them. If he noticed them, he didn’t say anything. It wouldn’t matter if he did. The guards were accustomed to seeing the twosome going for long strolls in the middle of the night.

5. Her head ached where they’d slugged her. It was still nighttime, but every so often she caught a glimpse of bright moonlight piercing the tops of the trees. The woods were a blurry haze, from what she could see through the filmy gauze curtain wrapped around her upper body. She didn’t dare move her arms for fear of signaling to them she was awake. Instead, she tried to remain alert. If by some chance they stopped to relieve themselves, or for any other reason, all she needed was a handful of seconds to get up and make a break for it. They wouldn’t be able to keep up with her. No man could. Even her mother, who was among the swiftest at the compound, wasn’t able to best her.

6. “Your father’s reign of terror is over, sweetheart. You can kiss the D’Jacques dynasty goodbye.” Lifting her head higher to the point where the pressure on her neck became almost unbearable, Rayburn leaned forward and captured her mouth with his. This time, it wasn’t gentle or sweet. It was hard, brutal, and a definite portent of things to come.

Stories of the Battle Lord and Lady of Alta Novis’s exploits have reached far and wide. Some sound almost unbelievable. That’s why Brass Cullum, along with his sons Dyer and Rayburn, have made the long trek to the D’Jacques compound to seek the help of the notorious battle lord in training an army of his own, to enable them to protect themselves from the increasing tribal attacks on his own compound.

However, not everyone is quick to trust the newcomers, and with good reason. They don’t know the Cullums have another plan, and it all hinges on luring the battle lord and lady away from the compound. With the D’Jacques gone and disposed of, they’re certain the compound will collapse on itself, making Cullum’s job easier.

Agreeing to accompany the Cullums back to their compound, the D’Jacques assemble their own small army and head out, along with their only daughter, Mistelle, and their oldest son, Mattox, leaving their youngest son to run Alta Novis in their absence. Cullum’s youngest son, Rayburn, has captured Mistelle’s attention, and he has plans to work his magic to win her over. Mattox and her best friend, Nevo, only hope she opens her eyes to see his true colors before it’s too late.

Kidnapping. Pain. Humiliation. Degradation. Mistelle won’t be beaten. She’s a D’Jacques, and she will live up to her name. But defeating the darkness in herself could prove to be more difficult.

Warning! Contains brown powder, wormy snakes, midnight talks, a lethal mutation, retaliation, a stone obelisk, and a life-long friendship that becomes the love of a lifetime.

Six on Sunday - LUCIEN, The D'Jacques Dynasty, Book 1

Six paragraphs from LUCIEN, The D'Jacques Dynasty, Book 1

1. Lucien bowed his head. Four years ago he hadn’t been able to fight alongside his family and the others. He’d been an untried kid who’d been forced to stay inside the lodge, along with several others, as the rest of his family waged that terrible war. True, he’d been given the task of protecting his Aunt Keelor and his cousin, Surisam. But it had been a long, bloody, and disgusting nine days. And what followed afterwards had dire consequences for the entire compound for years.

2.  “We all know that there are no aftereffects if a Normal contracts the virus and survives. But we have no such reassurance when it comes to Mutah. We know it’s impossible to tell if a Normal or Mutah has suffered the virus. In either case, there are no outward visible signs resulting from the disease. There’s no pock marks or lingering disabilities, nothing which would alert us to the fact that the person has contracted the virus. Which is why we can’t tell, until the Mutah reacts, if he has battled the virus, or that he’s been Damaged as a result.” Yulen motioned to Pechard. “I will let the emissary explain further.”

3.  His grip on it was solid, but because he was holding onto the thing with his right hand, he couldn’t draw his sword with his left. Somehow he found the dagger in his waistband and wrapped his fingers around the hilt. With a swipe, he sliced through the thing’s breast, and hot blood splattered across his face and into his eyes and mouth. Mortally wounded, the creature doubled its efforts to free itself. Pain streaked across the back of Lucien’s head and neck as it struggled in its death throes.

4.  Johna lay inside the doctor’s bedroll that he had loaned her and listened to the sounds of the forest that surrounded them. She and Lucien were in one of five small tents which surrounded a small fire pit outside. With her back to the flames reflecting through the fabric, she could watch him as he tried to sleep on his back. After a while, he rolled over, turning away from her. Either he was aware of her observing him, or he sensed it. Regardless, his actions made her smile.

5.  He had no knowledge of how long he’d been out. Sound faintly came to him, and he turned his head to see Johna lying on her side next to him, facing him. Rolling over, he checked her for signs of breathing. He didn’t hear the gurgling he was expecting. Alarmed, he rose up on one elbow, and a wave of dizziness hit him. It took a couple of seconds for his head to settle, and he reached over to touch her cheek. It was cool but dry. There was no sign of fever and she appeared to be breathing okay. But it didn’t mean she was out of the woods.

6.  Sensing this was his chance, Lucien scrambled to crawl away. Once he was free of the extra weight, he turned to find Johna straddling the Blood. She plunged her knife repeatedly into its back and neck as it fought to get free of her, but she held on, keeping the creature in a vise-like grip between her legs. It wasn’t until the Blood stopped squirming that she finally sat back. She was breathing heavily. Her face and clothes, and the dagger she held, was covered in gore.
