BREAKFAST WITH EMORY

A short horror story

by Linda Mooney writing as Gail Smith

For more years than I can count, Old Man Hunley came into the store every morning for breakfast. He always bought the same thing--a quart of milk and two pieces of toast from Mom. Then he'd go sit at his favorite table in the corner, pull a package wrapped in wax paper from out of his pocket, put the contents on the toast, and make a sandwich out of it.

That was Emory Hunley's routine for years, day in and day out, regardless of the weather, until the morning came when he didn't show.

The people who live, love, interact, and fight alongside with them. He wants to hear those personal anecdotes in order to discover a side of Yulen and Atty D'Jacques that few people know.

These are the stories he discovered.

Henry feels he's hit the jackpot when Liam MaGrath agrees to tell him a story about the battle lord and lady. He never anticipated the emotional impact he'd receive upon hearing it.

All he wanted was a little paint modification for his new car.

 EXCERPT:

“But I want that car.” He emphasized each word very clearly, very distinctly.

“Sir,” the salesman began again, leaning over his black Lucite and chrome desk. “As I’ve said before, you can have the car. I would love to sell you the car, but it must be as is. The model does not come with the option for additional decoration.”

Rolling his eyes, Deems tried to compromise. “Surely there is somebody in your body shop who can do a decent paint job? Hell and damnation! How much trouble can it be to add a few simple racing stripes?” Feeling the heat rise up into his face, he realized he needed to calm down or his doctor would double up the dosage on his blood pressure medicine.

“If I’m gonna pay a hundred and eighty-eight thousand for a car, the least you can do is get some red paint and put two or three of those real pretty, skinny lines all the way down the sides, just above the fender line. Crap, I’d do it myself but I haven’t got a real steady hand. Not at my age, anyway.” And I’m too damn old for all this nonsense, too, Deems thought as he pulled a hand across his forehead.

The salesclerk stood up. “Look, do you mind if I go talk with my manager for a minute?” The impasse had to end somewhere, and it was obvious it was going to take the intervention of someone higher up before any further progress could be made.

“Please do!” Deems snapped. “And if he won’t agree to my request, I’ll want to have a talk with him myself!” he yelled at the retreating back. “Haven’t you people ever heard the phrase ‘the customer is always right’?”

A young woman discovers the penalty for having excessive non-payments to her credit card company.

Excerpt:

Several things battered my abused senses all at once—the slatted bench I was sitting on, the black and white checkerboard floor tile under my feet that was smeared with redness, the blood dripping from my fingertips and watchband. A piece of something hanging from the tip of my nose. Images floated around me half-noticed, unimportant.

A tissue dabbed at my face. When it pulled away, I saw it was spotted with blood. Voices faded in and out.

            “I don’t know how—”

“Have you talked to any of the other eyewitnesses?”

“Oh, God, I can’t believe it! Oh, God. Oh, my God!” This last voice was soft, very soft, and full of raw horror. Then I realized it was mine.
            “...exploded, Officer. Blooey!”
