1. And now he was faced with a problem. He hadn’t anticipated the person hiding in the marsh to be a female. Yes, in the back of his mind that possibility had existed, especially since he knew that the clothing taken from the campsites was always feminine. But he’d never encountered, nor had he’d ever heard of a woman hiding out in the middle of a swamp. If he appeared to her as a puma, it would frighten her, and there was no telling how she’d react. For all he knew, she could have a gun on her, and she might be a crack shot like Billie. But, on the other hand, if he shifted back into his human form, she might react in the same way to see a naked man approaching. And he didn’t bring a change of clothes with him.

2.  The need to go over to her and pull her into his arms was almost impossible to resist. Yet he managed to keep a steel grip on himself as he watched her weep. This woman had touched something inside him. Maybe it was because of her uniqueness. Maybe it was because she’d been brutalized and half-starved. Or maybe it was because he’d always been a sucker for a woman’s tears. Whatever it was, it was turning into a feeling he couldn’t ignore or walk away from.

3. Thierry laid the key card next to the TV. “Here you go. Towels and washcloths are in the bathroom on the other side of that door, along with soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Feel free to watch TV. Someone will come get you when it’s time to eat.” Taking Rikki by both shoulders, the woman turned her around to look her in the face. “You’re going to be all right here. No one outside of our immediate family knows about you, and no one knows about us. We keep our secrets to ourselves, understand?”

4. “I don’t remember my parents,” she admitted. “At least, I think they were my parents.” Raising a hand to her face, she stared at it for a moment. “My earliest memory was when I discovered I could change my hand to look like a kitty cat’s. I was so surprised, I ran into the kitchen to show my momma. Or the woman I thought of as my momma. She saw me change it, and she started screaming. She got the broom and began to hit me with it.”

5. “Awright, everybody. Just a reminder that we lock the doors at ten p.m. sharp. House rules. It’s not that we want to spoil your fun, but it’s for your own protection. Don’t forget, we’re out in the middle of a swamp, and most of the critters around here are night scavengers, especially the gators and pumas.” He spoke in a slow drawl that surprised her, and she remembered what Thierry had said. “Don’t let his ‘good old boy’ charm fool you.” Because underneath it was the ferocious heart of a mountain lion.

6. A sob hitched in her chest. She couldn’t stay here. She couldn’t risk having the man she was coming to love be punished because of her. Not him, or any of the others. No matter how much she argued with herself, there was no way she could deny the fact that she had just one, and only one, option open to her, and that was to leave.

Six on Sunday - PREDATOR OF THE PINES, a Sensuous Paranormal Romantic Suspense

 Six paragraphs from Predator of the Pines, Subwoofers #4, a sensuous paranormal romantic suspense.

1. Backing away, Brew pulled his walkie from its clip and pressed the button to speak in a whisper. “American Pride to BITI. We have a Code Red at Super Foods. Code Red at Super Foods. Contact the police. Robbery in progress. Three suspects, all males in their twenties, all carrying handguns. Going under the radar. American Pride out.”

2.  Grudgingly, Celeste had to admit that Brew guy hadn’t lied to her. But given what she’d been through these past few weeks, with the way Doc and his asshole friends had been acting, she’d had no choice but to take advantage of the first opportunity that came her way to be rid of them…even if it meant finding herself in the middle of nowhere with no money, no job, no place to stay, and no future. And in the middle of a freaking hurricane, no less!

3. Thierry waved away her protests. “Charlie will be bringing up a few of her things you might be able to fit into. If you want, you can strip now, and I’ll take your clothes downstairs to be washed and dried. Better hurry, though. You never know when the electricity might go out.” She made a dramatic sigh. “I’ve been telling the menfolk we need to run the appliances off natural gas. Being this far from town, we can’t always rely on the county electric company. But do they listen? Noooo.”

4.  Yo shook his head. “No. Neither was it easy for Clint or Pud. But deep inside, deep in here…” He tapped his chest. “The both of me, animal and man, knew I’d found the one. I trusted my gut instinct even though my common sense was screaming off the charts. We’re metamorphs. We’re not really supposed to exist, but we do. And that means that sometimes we have to trust that inner part of ourselves first. You know as well as I do that we probably wouldn’t have survived our tours of duty if we hadn’t.”

5.  Brew chirped and waved his fake foot to show he’d heard and understood, and launched himself into the air. First, however, he had to get an inkling of where they were. Since the river and roads didn’t normally parallel each other, he had to climb higher to get a gander of what lay in the distance. Once he was able to assess a familiar landmark, he could quickly hone in on the lodge. And the simplest way to start was go back the way they’d come. Easier said than done with seventy-five mile an hour winds and constant rain buffeting him. He found himself looking forward to returning to the lodge and shaking himself dry. Maybe getting a quick kiss in secret from one beautiful sous chef.

6.  She landed at Charlie’s feet and scrambled to get up, when a pair of hands pressed down on her shoulders to keep her from rising. She turned to demand the woman let her go, when her attention was drawn to Brew. The man was literally stripping off his clothes while using one of the chairs to shield himself as Doc took aim and fired again. He was a lousy shot to begin with, and having to use his non-dominant hand made it worse. Even at this close range, the bullet went deep into the leather upholstery but missed Brew as he ducked. Once he was completely naked, he rolled sideways across the floor and jumped upward.

1. A movement off to the side caught his attention, and he turned to give Thierry a smile. He was over his initial shock from when she'd arrived this morning. There he was, expecting to see a typical female's idea of going tracking and hunting by finding her wearing blue jeans and a lightweight short sleeve or sleeveless blouse. Instead, Thierry wore a long-sleeve denim shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a hunting vest, olive drab cargo pants, and a pair of scuffed snakeskin boots. A Houston Texans baseball cap sat on her head. And when she'd removed the cap and placed it on the dining table before eating, he noticed she'd put her hair up into a sensible ponytail. And no makeup. The woman was stunning without a speck of cosmetics.

2. She hefted her rifle, but kept the barrel pointed down. He expected her to say something about his decision, but instead she simply nodded. Pulling a key attached to a short keychain from one of her pants pockets, she tossed it to him. Yo caught the slight hesitation in her actions. It was almost as if she didn't want to handle the keychain at all. He paused to stare at the little enamel black bear dangling from the ring, then grinned at her. "Cute."

3. He sniffed, and instantly his skin constricted. His groin tightened in response, forcing him to turn his back to her. There it was again. Her perfume, or whatever it was that caused his head to swim. Shut inside the little cabin, and being in close proximity to her, was giving his olfactory senses the chance to fill his sinus cavities with that rich, almost mesmerizing scent. Trying to cover the obvious bulge in his pants, he stepped outside to breathe in the sweet air. Thierry followed.

4. Rearing up on his hind legs, Yo slowly turned 360 degrees, testing and tasting the air for any sign, any hint of another intruder. Satisfied there was no one else around, he dropped down onto all fours and concentrated on the leaves and bushes. It didn't take him long to find the faint trace of the sharpshooter, left there when the man pushed through the undergrowth as he made his way toward the cabin. The shooter may have used every stealth method he knew, but the one variant he never thought about was the one that would ultimately help Yo track him down. Huffing, Yo proceeded to follow the trail.

5. Total disbelief swept through her, and she lifted her face to stare at the enormous black bear as it launched itself at the man, attacking the shooter from the rear while the guy was concentrated on the cabin. The animal knocked the man face-first into the ground, then took out the guy's gun, along with the hand and part of the arm, with one heavy swipe of its huge claws. The bear roared again, showing her its wide mouth filled with wicked teeth, and Thierry recognized the sound as the one she'd heard earlier.

6. Crouching, Yo prepared to leap from the dock onto the trail, when he heard a familiar whistling sound. His blood froze. Without a second thought, he threw himself into the water as the shell hit the broadside of the boat, and the craft exploded, taking out most of the dock with it.
