Upon clearing out one area in particular, Pyre sees something, or someone, fleeing and decides it’s worth saving. He wasn’t expecting a human, or that she’d be able to see him. Could it be he’d gotten as lucky as his brothers and found his woman?

Andrea is torn. Yes, Pyre saved her, but he’s also responsible for all that is happening. Does she trust him? Can she trust her heart? When the other two women who “belong” to the demi-gods go missing, it’ll take everyone working together to save them.

Several gods are already down for the count, but how many more are left to be conquered before the mortals are truly free? One thing the brothers have finally learned is that together they stand a chance. Especially with their feisty women by their sides. Gods or not, never underestimate the power of a mortal.

1. Andrea scanned the list of camera sites. “Is there another camera overlooking the Grand Canyon?” Memory of the man standing on the large rock continued to haunt her. What made his appearance more incredible was that, when he stepped out of the flow, she could see he was half-nude. A skirt or some sort of Tarzan-like garment covered his lower region, but otherwise he was naked from the waist up. And down, she told herself. He had no shoes on. No pants. And he was barefoot! In the middle of a lava lake!

2. “Hold on! I’m getting to it,” Ceris cut her off with a smile. “At some point the remaining upper gods decided they needed to reassert their dominance. Remind us lowly mortals they still existed and must be worshipped. So they went down to the lower levels of hell where our boys were being held and they made a deal with them. If the demi-gods went out and destroyed most of mankind and the world, they would be granted their freedom.”

3. “Wise?” Andrea pooh-poohed the idea at first, then had second thoughts. “I guess you’re correct. Maybe I am. Heaven knows I’ve had my share of failed relationships in the past.” She studied him. Despite everything, he wasn’t bad to look at. But there remained that pesky little four-letter word hanging between them. “Pyre, I’ll be honest with you. I don’t know if I love you. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to love you. I mean, at first I was royally pissed at you. Screw that. I was angry and mad and resentful after what you did to my friends. They may have been people you never knew, but they were good people. They were kind and considerate. They gave me a safe place to stay when you and your brothers brought hell on earth. They kept me alive!” She tapped her chest for emphasis. Her anger had returned and she took it out on him. Funny, but it didn’t make her feel better to get it out of her system.

4. Andrea sensed the goddess shifting into that birdlike monstrosity. She glanced over her shoulder, but seeing the immense creature in the flesh was a shock to her system she wasn’t prepared for. She screamed as a huge claw reached out to snag her. Instinctively, Andrea brought her other hand down. Her intent was to impale the claw or some part of the creature with her impromptu weapon, but she missed. However, the blade slashed across the harpy’s chest, cutting through skin and feathers, and leaving a wide gash in its wake.

5. Slowly, he brought forth his own shining, emanating his personal brightness from within until he became a glowing white beacon. Turning around, he looked down the mouth of the tunnel that led into the bowels of the mountain. Down where they’d been told Hades had a bridge leading into his kingdom. Whether the god of the underworld actually did was a moot point. Neither Pyre nor his brothers ever cared to explore to find out if there was.

6. Hearing her gasp of surprise, Pyre turned around from where he was keeping Ceris and Roby alive to cast her a smile. The look in his eyes and the sweetness of the smile he gave her when he saw her touched her heart, and it was then that Andrea knew she was really, truly, in love with the guy. This demi-god with the strength and power of fire, and who would do everything he could to keep her safe and happy.

Roby manages to stay afloat, unable to comprehend the destruction happening in front of her eyes, but the giant rising out of the ocean? That she really has trouble wrapping her head around.

Normally unseen by mortals unless he wills it, Meris is surprised when Roby calls out to him, and he cannot turn his back on the mortal begging to be saved. 1. She dragged her fingers through her short hair and threw him another confused look. “This is really happening, isn’t it? You’re the real thing, aren’t you? You’re a god. Ah, I mean minor god,” she quickly corrected herself, holding out a hand to cease his protest. “This isn’t something I dreamed up, is it? You being a hundred feet tall and making mountains out of the water. And bringing a fire that burns underwater.” She glanced at the incoming waves, then back at him. “How did you do that, anyway?”

2. “Remember, Aeron and Meris have now claimed a mortal for themselves. The females will be their weakness. If and when you discover the Primordials’ whereabouts, do not engage them. Do you understand me? Wait until they lead you to where they have hidden their women. Even then, do not reveal yourself,” Zeus harshly ordered. “Once they leave, then you can take their mortal playthings.”

3. Roby walked over to the edge of the beach where the waves tried to lap at her open-toed sandals. Staring out over the vast waters, she held out her hands. “I understand now, Meris. I understand why you’re having to do what you’re doing. Why you and your brothers have no choice. I’m not mad at you any longer. I’m mad at those horrid gods who are forcing you to commit these abominable acts. I’m mad at myself for not realizing you’re probably hurting inside because you don’t want to be causing all these deaths. All this destruction. Come back and talk to me, Meris. I want to help you, just like you’ve helped me. I can’t offer you fresh water or fish to eat, but I can offer you a comforting shoulder. Come and feel free to unburden yourself. Tell me what you’ve been through. Tell me about the torture. Tell me what it was like to spend all those long and terrible years underground. I’m here for you, Meris.”

4. She shouldn’t have laughed at him. As soon as he’d bowed his head, confusion reddening his face, she knew she’d gone too far. She mentally kicked herself for what she’d believed was a bit of playfulness and teasing. His lack of knowing how to respond tore into her heart.  I forgot he comes from a time in history that hasn’t existed in thousands of years. Nothing about this world is familiar to him anymore. That alone would terrify anyone, godlike or not. And after all he’s been through, after all he’s suffered, now he’s faced with an impossible task that has to be eating at him. I can see it in his brothers’ eyes, too. They hate what they’re being forced to do. I can almost see it tearing at their guts because they’re having to murder all those innocent people.

5. The light around her brightened, burning her eyes through her eyelids and searing her skin. Roby whined in pain, when a roar of anger reverberated in the chamber. Without warning, the light vanished and she was released. She fell onto the rocks and sand as another scream of fury almost shook the interior. Blinking past the tears, she glanced up just as a massive wall of water arched over her and slammed into the sun god, sending him flying across the length of the grotto. 

6. Apollo chuckled. “I told you your strength was no match for mine. But I will give you credit for your tenacity. I have not had this much fun in ages.” He laughed again as he slowly drew nearer the captive demi-god, stopping in front of him to relish in Meris’s torment. “Zeus was a fool to have you and your ilk bound and kept underground for so long. He should have allowed us to play with you. Put us in the arena with you to help us keep our powers honed and our skills perfected. No. Instead he placed you in the deepest part of the Underworld to rot, while we slowly faded into obscurity. Disappearing one at a time into the ether for lack of believers. It wasn’t until the loss of Athena that Hades convinced him to bring you back up from the depths.” He snickered in amusement. “You and your brothers will bring us from the brink of extinction. You are powerful in your own right, but you are no match for us.”
