Six on Sunday - BABS CLAUS, Tuffy Claus Bk. 2, a Contemporary Fantasy Holiday Romance

Six paragraphs from BABS CLAUS, Tuffy Claus Bk. 2, a Contemporary Fantasy Holiday Romance

1. She stroked his hair, unmindful of the fact that the shaggy mess was tangled and greasy, and had bits of leaves and grass stuck in it. Or that his clothes were stained and dirty, and ragged around the hem of his sweater that was too small for him. His thin body continued to tremble, making her wonder if it was due to the cold, or his growing trepidation, or both. "That was a brave thing you did when you wrote that letter to Santa. When did you write it?”

2.
She bit her lower lip. From the depression that was forming around them like a dark fog, she started to curse herself for bringing the subject to their attention. The last thing she expected was for a muscular arm to go around her and pull her against an equally strong chest as Dominik kissed the top of her head.

3. A hand cupped her cheek. “Listen. Here’s the plan. I have a tire iron in my left saddlebag. I’m going in and confronting Aussman and his cousin, and whoever else is in there. I’m going to be loud, so pay attention to what I say. As soon as you hear me start making a commotion, take the tire iron and smash this window. Get inside, wake the kids, and get them outside. Put the girl in your lap and have Harold hold on behind you, and take off. Get them and yourself the hell away from here.”

4. She lowered herself down beside him again. Lying there together, she knew she’d never feel as comforted, as loved, or as happy as she was at that moment. The room grew quiet except for the occasional pop and sizzle coming from the wood burning in the fireplace across the room, and the soft patter of snow hitting the window panes. Eventually she heard his breathing grow shallow and knew he’d fallen back to sleep. Carefully, she eased herself away from him and tiptoed out of the infirmary. She was about to leave when Lillybell flagged her down. Seeing the tray the elf carried, she smiled. “Let me guess. You’re here to bring my Tuffy some of that wonderful medicinal tea you gave me when I was incapacitated,” she teased the little woman.

5. “But that’s a good thing. He can’t run roughshod over you, and you won’t pull your punches, either. The fact that you used to be in law enforcement proves you’re strong. You can think clearly through a crisis and handle yourself with dignity. So, please, don’t do anything that would deliberately put your life at risk. Jessica and I have come to love you almost as much as he does.” Kris slowly shook his head. “After my wife, my brother means the world to me, and I will do everything I can to keep him happy. And if that means pissing you off so you don’t put yourself in danger, I won’t hesitate.”

6. Dominik awoke with a jerk. Sweat covered his body, but the worst part were the memories that continued to haunt him. He remembered the sound of the gun going off the same instant he felt the bullet strike him, as if Comet had kicked him in the gut. In that instant, all thought of his mission disappeared. He recalled falling to the floor, waiting for the next bullet which never came. But his eyes remained fixed on the end of the hall, knowing Babs would eventually appear. Knowing without any doubt that she’d come to save him, only it would be too late. Praying he could see her beautiful face one last time before he perished…
