Please Welcome Veronica Scott as She Tells Us About Her Sci-Fi Romance, "Mystery Dancer" from Embrace the Passion, Pets in Space 3 Anthology

STAR CRUISE: MYSTERY DANCER
from Pets In Space 3:
Embrace the Passion
by Veronica Scott

Thanks for having me as your guest to talk about my story for this year’s Pets In Space 3: Embrace the Passion anthology!

I love going back to revisit my interstellar cruise liner, the Nebula Zephyr, for these PISA stories, as the ship cruises through the futuristic human civilization known as The Sectors.  I’ve written a number of books and novellas centered on events aboard the ship now and find the whole cruise setup lends itself to telling a good scifi romance adventure tale. Readers new to my world don’t need to know a lot of backstory to enjoy the events, and for those who have read others in the series, it’s a nice return to see some favorite characters (I hope!).

I’ve always been fascinated by dancers and dancing, including (but not limited to) the Rockettes, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, “A Chorus Line”, Dancing with the Stars, old movie musicals, “Center Stage” – if it has dancing, I’ll be there! (I have two left feet so it’s wish fulfillment for me LOL.) When I established my interstellar cruise line, I put a theater and a resident troupe of dancers on board, naming them the Comettes. Unfortunately in the first scifi romance novel I published, Wreck of the Nebula Dream, the ship gets destroyed, so I never had a chance to tell a story featuring my dancers. I put a theater and more Comettes on board my next cruise liner, the Nebula Zephyr, and now finally the right heroine has come along.

The dancing makes for a bit of a lighter element to the story to contrast with many of the suspenseful events relating to the heroine’s tragic past.

Tassia, the lead in this year’s story, is a long lost princess and I asked myself how such a person would get on board the ship and what she could do there to fit in. It occurred to me a princess, even one raised on the run, would probably know how to dance. I set up my auditions at the spaceport of the planet in question and after a long, grueling day, Tassia gets hired to fill an opening in the troupe. See the excerpt below for a taste of the audition process!

STAR CRUISE: MYSTERY DANCER blurb:  Tassia Megg is a woman on the run after the death of her elderly guardian. Her search to get off the planet in a hurry comes when chance directs her to an open dance audition for the luxury cruise liner Nebula Zephyr’s resident troupe. If there is one thing Tassia can do, it is dance!

Security Officer Liam Austin is suspicious of the newest performer to join the Comettes. She shows all the signs of being a woman on the run and seems to fit the Sectors-wide broadcast description of a missing thief, accused of stealing priceless artifacts. As he gets to know Tassia during the cruise, he starts to wonder if she’s something more – a long vanished princess in hiding from deadly political enemies of her family perhaps? And what’s the story with the three-eyed feline companion other crew members swear Tassia brought aboard the ship? Does the animal even exist?

As the ship approaches its next port of call, all the issues come to a boil and Liam must decide if he’ll step in to help Tassia or betray her. Life is about to get very interesting aboard the Nebula Zephyr as Liam tries to uncover the truth. Could F’rrh, the peculiar alien cat he has been hearing about, be the key to the mystery and Tassia’s fate?

The excerpt – the Director of the Comettes is speaking and has outlined the process and her needs. Micki is another dancer who’s kindly befriend Tassia at the auditon.:

“I need five dancers and possibly an alternate or two, but I won’t hire anyone today if the fit isn’t there. Questions?”

There were no questions. Tassia hung onto her backpack tightly, a bit intimidated at the way the women surrounding her seemed so comfortable with the audition process. One probably didn’t start a career as a professional dancer in the Sectors by auditioning for a premiere troupe. She felt her muscles tightening the more she considered the daunting odds of her making it all the way to selection. Taking a deep breath, she reminded herself sternly there were no other options for her so she’d simply have to be good enough to force the Comettes to want her in their ranks.

Tassia wanted to inquire who the other judges were—several women and one man, but she decided it didn’t matter. The director was the one who did the hiring and who had to be impressed.

As the first ten girls lined up on the specified area of the floor, Tassia was suddenly glad her number placed her in the tenth group. She’d have time to see what other people did for their freestyle to attempt to impress Ms. Cartajj. And a solo, if she got that far.

What she realized as she watched the dancers take the floor was people were highlighting what they did best. For some it was leaps or turns. For others apparently it was gymnastic moves, although for many the skill being showcased involved a lot of precise steps accented with shimmying and hip swivels. A number of the women had obviously pre-choreographed sets of steps they repeated as long as the music was on.

By the time her turn came, Tassia decided to do a sequential series of rapid steps, pirouettes and showy poses requiring supremely good balance, which she could fit to the music being provided. It was her observation from watching the judges that dancers who showed technical skills appeared to make more of a favorable impression than the ones who did flashy, sexy moves. She walked confidently to her designated spot on the temporary wooden dance floor, assumed the opening pose and launched into her routine as the first notes sounded. Remembering to smile as if her audience was composed of her best friends, she had no clear memory of the two minutes when she finished with a graceful final pose. As she walked from the space, she believed she’d done well.

“Wow, you’re something else,” Micki grabbed her by the elbow. Micki had been one of the candidates demonstrating spins and beautiful extensions, combined with sexy shimmies. “Where the seven hells did you train?”

“Private tutors when I was a kid,” Tassia said vaguely. “Did I look all right, compared to the others?”
Micki laughed. “Miss High and Mighty Director never took her eyes off you. I’d say you’re clear to the semifinals at least.”

“Who are the other people sitting with her?”

“Her assistant, Syadana, also the Cruise Director for the ship, the dance captains from the two casts, and I heard someone say the cute guy is ship’s security, here to do the paperwork for anyone she hires, so the person can ship out today. The ship leaves orbit tonight.” Micki nudged her in the ribs. “Whoever he is, he was pretty riveted by your performance too.”

Pacing, rising onto her toes to keep her muscles from cooling off too much, Tassia shook her head. “If he’s not a decider, he’s irrelevant.”

Seeming to be at a loss for words, Micki gave her a wide-eyed look. “Well, he’s damn cute anyway. I hope the director lets him vote because I know he paid attention to me.”

Please Welcome Veronica Scott as She Talks About Her Sci-Fi Romance, DARIK, Sectors New Allies, Bk. 4

Thrilled to announce the next book in my Badari Warriors series, DARIK! The cover is another gem from the talented Fiona

The blurb:

Nicolle James is far from her home in the human Sectors, kidnapped by alien scientists to be the subject of horrifying experiments.  Her only hope might be a mysterious soldier she’d glimpsed outside the laboratory fence. She’d managed to sneak a few words of conversation with him when her captors weren’t watching but now the aliens were taking her inside the lab to begin the experiments.

Darik, a warrior of the genetically engineered Badari pack, is on a solo recon mission to check out a mysterious new lab high in the mountains. His orders are strict – do not engage. But when he has a chance meeting with the woman who might be his mate, he vows not to abandon her, orders or no orders.

Can he get inside an underground lab, find Nicolle and rescue her without getting captured himself? And when he learns the lab’s deadly secrets, can he get word to his pack about the new dangers?

Because the ruthless alien scientist running the experiments wants to get her hands on him too and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.

The excerpt:

Darik measured the size of the huge paw print in the snow, comparing the breadth to his own generously sized hand. “Big predator, nothing we’ve ever seen before. Nothing comparable in the lowlands.” He took a deep breath of the crisp mountain air, automatically sorting the scents and savoring many new to him. Small furred creatures, towering trees, elusive woodland flowers and moss – he enjoyed all the novelties. It was still a rare luxury for him not to smell the hated disinfectants and chemicals of the Khagrish lab where his kind were created.

His metallic companion MARL12 shifted beside him, disturbing the air as the small alien device floated on an antigrav cushion. “Best to avoid an encounter with any predators.”

Grinning, Darik rose to his feet and eyed the miniature ovoid, now positioned a few feet further away, orange and pink lights flicking across its shiny surface in rapid patterns. The one tiny patch of green on the machine which he’d noticed was consistently present blinked in the lower rear quadrant of the Alien Intelligence unit’s silver skin.

Darik dusted snow from his palms. “Nervous? I’ll protect you, don’t worry.” He kicked loose snow over the tracks contemptuously. “Big as this animal may be, he’s not going to challenge a full grown Badari male like me. My talons are twice the size of his.”

“We can’t afford to be diverted from our primary mission—”

“Give it a break, MARL12. We’re in this animal’s territory and, unless he challenges me, I’m not looking for trouble. Live and let live.”

Darik had been dropped off at a higher elevation in the mountains so he wouldn’t be spotted by the enemy based in the foothills. He’d descended thousands of feet since his arrival, taking a circuitous route to his assigned target. Neither he nor his Alpha wanted any hint of a Badari presence in the area to become known. He relished the chance to hike through the old growth forest, alone except for his annoying AI companion.

“The sun will set in thirty two minutes and twelve seconds,” MARL12 announced in a crisp tone with no resemblance to the timbre of either human or Badari voices but was uniquely his own, as if a sizable bird had been given vocal chords.

Darik glanced at the small alien AI dispatched to assist him on this reconnaissance and decided to poke its emotional responses with a little barb. “I can see in the dark perfectly well. It’s a Badari attribute. Can’t you?”

A brief silence descended as the AI floated along on its antigrav cushion, bobbing over bushes and other obstacles. MARL12 might be a miniaturized version of its parent unit but the superior attitude was full scale. “I have complete visual acuity under all circumstances. My concern was for you to have a safe base camp established before dark.”

Pausing, Darik leaned in close.

The AI retreated a foot and hovered.

“I can take care of myself, thanks. I don’t need a minder.” Standing at his full seven foot height, Darik sampled the air again. “There’s no predator in this area capable of taking on a Badari and hoping to win.” He flashed his talons and fangs for the sheer joy of it. Leaping to the flat top of a nearby boulder, he surveyed the vistas ahead and expanded his chest with pleasure. This was the way for a man to live—free, with unlimited nature to explore. Of course, I do have a job to do. Aydarr didn’t send me here to have fun.

Please Welcome Veronica Scott as She Tells Us About Her Sci-Fi Romance, JADRIAN, Sectors New Allies Book 3

JADRIAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE (SECTORS NEW ALLIES SERIES BOOK 3)
By Veronica Scott

Thanks for having me as your guest today! Always fun to talk about a new release!

The blurb:  Taura Dancer has been pushed to her limits by alien torturers known as the Khagrish and is ready to die when suddenly the lab where she’s held as a prisoner is taken down by an armed force of soldiers.

The man who rescues her from a burning cell block is Jadrian of the Badari, a genetically engineered alien warrior with as many reasons to hate the Khagrish as Taura has. This set of shared past experiences and the circumstances of her rescue create an unusual bond between them.

Safe in the hidden base where Jadrian and his pack take her, Taura struggles to regain her lost memories and overcome constant flashbacks during which she lashes out at all who come near. Only Jadrian can recall her from the abyss of her visions and hallucinations.

As the war against the Khagrish continues, it becomes increasingly critical to find out who she really is and how she can help in the fight. Until she can control her terrors and trust her own impulses, Taura’s too afraid to pursue the promise of happiness a life with Jadrian as her mate might offer.

When he’s captured by the dreaded enemy, will she step forward to help save him, or will she remain a prisoner of her past?

This is the third book in a new scifi romance series and each novel has a satisfying Happy for Now ending for the hero and heroine, not a cliffhanger. Some overarching issues do remain unresolved in each book since this is an ongoing series but romance always wins the day in my novels!

The excerpt – right after Taura has been rescued from the burning cell block:

The man who’d rescued her was easily seven feet tall, amazingly fit and muscular, and almost preternaturally handsome, but definitely not Terran descent human like her. His amber eyes were kind, even when glowing golden, and he seemed concerned with her welfare, as evidenced by their current race to find a medic. A good sign, but she’d learned not to take anything or anyone at face value on this hellhole planet.

Unable to draw a deep breath despite his encouragement, she drifted in and out of consciousness until she realized she was lying across a row of seats on a flyer, while voices talked above her head. She reached out, wanting to keep her rescuer close. He represented safety, she trusted him as much as she was able to put her faith in anyone other than herself. He’d saved her once and she was going to rely on him to continue to intervene on her behalf.

Her fingers were engulfed in a huge hand, gently squeezed. Her rescuer leaned close, his voice low pitched. “My friend Timtur’s a medic, he’s going to take care of you now till we get home and you can see the human doc.”

A human physician? Were these men connected to the Sectors after all? She had so many questions but was too debilitated to ask. Time would tell and she was too weak to take any action until someone tried to place a medical mask over her face. She struggled to sit up, shoving away the mask even after catching a whiff of pure, fresh oxygen. “Don’t leave me—how can I be sure I’m safe if you’re not here to keep watch?”

The soldier rescuer crouched to be at her eye level. Even in her state of confused panic, she was woman enough to notice yet again how incredibly attractive he was and how hypnotizing his eyes could be. Taura wanted to relax into the golden glow and keep him by her side, but it wasn’t to be.
“Battle’s not over, I gotta get back.” He smiled. “There might be someone else who needs to be rescued. You want me to check, right?”

She nodded. “No other humans here, though.” Her voice was a croak. “I was told I was alone over and over. I never saw anyone else in the cells.”

“Well, we’ll make sure. Now you let our medic help you.” He tried to withdraw his hand and she tightened her grip.

“I’ll give her something to relax her,” said the other man, who she’d barely glanced at, stepping away from the seats. “Hang on for a minute.”

Although the mention of sedating drugs made her uneasy, given the Khagrish tendency toward using meds  to attempt to break her inner resolve,  she couldn’t look away from those fascinating eyes long enough to protest. Maybe all his people had glowing amber eyes but right now he was the special one to her and the only person she cared about making a connection with. “What’s your name?” she whispered despite the soreness in her throat.

“Jadrian, of the Badari. And you?”

“I don’t know.” Her name was the one precious thing she did remember about herself, but she hadn’t given it to the Khagrish, and she wasn’t ready to give it to anyone, not even her rescuer. She put her free hand to her forehead and gave him a different truth as a distraction. “They—the Khagrish—did terrible things to me. Everything’s jumbled in my mind.”

He smoothed her hair away from her face. “They did reprehensible things to a lot of us. It’s okay. I’m sure you’ll remember details soon enough.”

Taura fought not to recoil from his gentle, well intentioned touch, afraid to irritate the person who’d rescued her. “I didn’t let the scientist in charge win. I couldn’t let him win.” It was suddenly important to her this warrior know she was a fighter too.

“You survived, that’s proof enough for me how tough you must be.” His voice was an approving caress.

With great care, he pried her fingers from his as the medic rejoined them. “Wait a minute,” Jadrian said to his comrade. Opening his shirt slightly, he took a leather thong from around his neck and showed Taura the small blue stone pendant, swirls of color suggesting a sleeping cat. “Keep this safe for me. I’ll come reclaim it when I get back to the valley later, all right?”
