Making Love - From Whose Point of View?

(Note: This post will be displayed at the top of this blog during the Romancing the Hop blog hop. Just scroll down for the newer posts.)
*
This has always intrigued me. When I reach a love scene, I always note whose point of view is telling me about it. If the story is in first person, then the viewpoint is from the woman (unless I'm reading a homo-erotic story, which doesn't give me a choice.)

Otherwise, in most cases, I get to vicariously live every lick and tickle from the woman's POV.

So I went back and checked to see how I wrote these scenes, and discovered that I'm about half and half - sometimes in the same book!

For instance, in HEARTFAST, depending on the scene, sometimes you get the hero's version, and at other times, the heroine's description. The same goes for X-TROLLER.

But I do have some books where the POV of lovemaking is strictly one-sided throughout. HEALER OF THE HEART, HIS LAST REQUESTTHE GIFTED, and  SANDEFLAY are told strictly from the man's viewpoint. While the LORD OF THUNDER series, FIRELIGHT, DEEP, and CAPTIVE SURRENDER are revealed from the heroine's POV. In fact, when I did a little calculating, I realized I've written about half and half.

Which makes me wonder - do you prefer to read a great sex scene as the man, or the woman? Comment below, and you could WIN!

Every day of the blog hop, I will be giving away 3 prizes: a free ebook, an Amazon gift card, and a Starbuck's gift card. Be sure to include your email address in your post. Come back the next day to see if you've won. You may enter every day, but only one entry per day will be permitted.

At the same time you comment, your name will be entered in the blog hop's Grand Prize Contest, of which there will be three winners! Grand Prizes include a Kindle, a gift card, and the entire swag shown below.

So comment now, and Good Luck! (Then skip below and choose your next destination!)

I think I like to read a great sex scene when the point of view switches back and forth so you get both, Thanks Carin

I don't mind whose the point of view is but i think it could be fun to see the same scene once from the male perspective and once from teh heroine ( as a bonus) so we could see when it was more intense for who

Thank you a lot for your giveaway ( being international though i can't enter for the starbuck card but the rest is fine^^ )

I am probably more partial to a woman's point of view because I can relate more to it. I never really thought about it. Thanks so much for an awesome giveaway! I love your books!

As a woman I usually prefer to read from the woman's point of view. That way I can pretend I'm the character and immerse myself in the fantasy.

The man's--I like m/m best, because you get to read the men's perspective from multiple permutations!

I like both points of view actually. It's as important for me to get inside the man's head as it is the woman's.

I like when the point of view is switched between male and female, so that I can see the situation from both sides. Sometimes it's very interesting how many misunderstandings can happen.

^^ i think the first time i really saw the difference was thank to the curran POV written by ilona andrews ( free short stories) that is a "rewrite" of some parts/chapter of their series Kate Daniels but from the male point of vue and i had so much fun with those^^

I think that reading the same scene or parts of the same scene from both pov's is fun and makes the scene richer. When I'm writing, I usually start w/the woman's pov and then I get so caught up in it, I don't want to switch. LOL

I don't mind either one, but I think I prefer from the woman's pov. Simply because, well, I am a woman, and I can pretty much tell you how those certain things would feel! :)

Thanks for the giveaway! :)

Thanks for participating! Really like the hop so far!! I love reading, especially romance. I love reading contemporary, historical and erotic romance. I love the happy ending that is garenteed at the end. My favorite book is Lover Mine by JR Ward! I love John Matthew and Xhex. My favorite romantic moment was when my fiancé asked me to marry him! We meant two years ago right around when summer was ending! I think it is romantic when he brings me flowers because no one else has ever done it! My friend and I went out for our last big night out before classes started again. Thanks so much! Hope everyone else is having a great long weekend!!

Since it's commonly from the woman's POV, I like reading the man's POV. It's great when it switches POV for the whole book.

I wanted to ask do you think that male author like to write more the male point of view of they also favor the female one?

I think most romance books are split down the middle half her POV, half his.
Thanks for participating in the hop and giving us all a chance to win, and share our stories.

@miki
I think it depends on the author. I don't think men write strictly from the hero's POV, no more than female authors write only from the heroine's perspective.

LOVE your books, Linda, happy to have been led to your blog by the hop :). I don't think POV matters to me so long as I am sucked in and therefore not aware of pov. I read romance to escape and live in the characters. Good writers make that happen. I hate falling out of the story and wondering why something doesn't add up ..

Qwillia Rain said...

For me it varies, but I like it either way, as long as the sex is instrumental in driving the story and relationship forward.
For me, romance is all about the trust and respect built between the characters. Since I write BDSM, these elements are very important.
Thank you for participating in the blog hop!
