Six on Sunday
Six paragraphs from LOVIN' LARGE, an erotic sci-fi, paranormal, futuristic romance by Linda Mooney writing as Carolyn Gregg.
1. When
you wake up, you’ll have no idea how you got here, or why, he
silently told the creature. But trust me
when I say, you’ll be instrumental in bringing your species back from the brink
of total extinction. Welcome to the twenty-second century, young lady. Welcome
to a world that shouldn’t exist, but does.
2. “But we’re looking at bigger and maybe badder
animals. We could be looking at apex predators. Hell, there’s all kinds of
big-ass critters we’ve yet to receive, just because of the weight restriction.”
3. “Wait!” Holden Crow waved an arm. Everyone
looked over at the man responsible for shipping the specimens to their new
homes. The guy glared at Westfall. “The way it was explained to us how the
Grabber worked was that it literally set a trap on the ground in a time prior
to when the planet passed through that comet’s tail.” He held out his hand
parallel to the ground with the palm up. “Any animal that walked onto the trap
was then captured.” He curled his fingers, as if holding a ball. “And sent the
animal to the Receiving Room. The amount of power given to the Grabber
determined how big an animal it was able to transmit. That was proven back when
they first upped the percentage, and they began bringing in deer and goats
instead of rabbits, and cats, and lizards. Are you telling us now that the
increase in power also determined how far back in time it was able to grab
things?”
4. The dinosaur was melting into the floor. No, not
melting. Changing. Reforming. Reshaping. Until the figure of a naked woman lay
on the cold tiles where a raptor had been moments before.
5. Asa moved up close to the older man, nearly
getting into his face. “Listen to me for damn minute, will you? What I’m
telling you is the truth. The videos will back me. The Grabber brought back a
dinosaur. Some kind of raptor, from what I could tell. But as soon as it keeled
over, it turned into a woman.” He slowly shook his head. “I sound like I’ve
lost it, but I’m dead serious, Derris. That naked woman was brought back from
the past, and she’s a fucking dinosaur.”
6. “Saw-ree,” she parroted. Her face grew stern.
His answer didn’t satisfy her. With a suddenness that shocked him, she
transformed into her raptor persona and slammed her body into the wall. Asa
instinctively jumped back, but the inner barrier held firm. She bared her teeth
at him in a clear threat display, but she didn’t try to breach the wall a
second time. She morphed back into her human form. It took all of a handful of
seconds. “Eesoo maydraw!”
