Six on Sunday - Six paragraphs from BREACHERS: Kamrose and Cross, Book 4, a Contemporary Fantasy/ Paranormal Romance
1. Two
straight whiskeys and a T-bone steak done exactly the way he liked it were
enough to let him catch a few winks during the nearly three-hour trip to the
San Antonio International Airport. No sooner had he exited the plane than
another figure, this time in a dark brown suit, was waiting for him when he
entered the terminal.
2. She
found herself staring at the man. He wasn’t movie star handsome. His face was
weathered. His nose looked like it had been broken at least once, and his
shaggy hair needed a comb and scissors. But it was his intense blue eyes that
held her spellbound. That, and the fact that his western-cut, long-sleeve denim
shirt with the pearl snap buttons looked like it had been painted over his
muscles. Her first thought was that he must hit the gym every day of the week,
but he didn’t give off a gym vibe.
3. The man leaned back against his desk, took a deep breath, and
exhaled it through his mouth. “Here’s the deal. Both sets of bones came from
young males, approximately fourteen to eighteen years of age. The remains show
no signs of violence. No marks from weapons, like bullets or knives. No sharp
edges or teeth marks to indicate they’d been sawn apart, although victim number
two had a recently healed fracture of the ulna. However, I did find
something rather odd,” he remarked. “The victims appeared to have been wearing
a type of uniform.”
4. Trenna
pulled, using all her strength, but she felt as though she was making little
headway. She’d sensed a shifting in the malevolent power, and something inside
told her that it would soon come after her. Silently, she cursed herself for
not bringing her sword inside with her. Redoubling her efforts, she tried even
harder, yet the height and weight difference between herself and Reece was
beginning to take its toll on her endurance. Releasing his shirt, she tried to
pull her partner to his feet, placing his weight upon her own shoulders.
5. “Exactly. That factory was built over what could possibly be a
major burial ground for hundreds of Mexican soldiers. Hundreds of
soldiers, long dead, yet their spirits are still fighting, still waging a war
that was nearly two hundred years ago. The gah
have latched onto those entities and are feeding off of them like leeches.
Feeding off their energies. So unless I destroy the gah, the spirits of those dead soldiers will never rest in peace.”
6. “All right! Show
yourselves! You know I’m here! Come out and fight me! You know you want to! You
don’t want me anywhere around this place because you’ve claimed it for your
own. But I have some bad news to tell you. This place isn’t going to be around
much longer. They’re tearing it down. Do you hear me? They’re tearing this
place down and building something else here! It’s going to become a place where
hundreds of people will flock to on a
daily basis, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it! If you try,
you’ll use up all your energies, and then where will you be? So you have two
choices! Come out and face me now, or go back into hiding and never come out
again! How do you like the sound of that,
eh? You can face me now, and be defeated in a glorious array of energy! Or
crawl away like worms, and never show your entities again!”
