Dear Linda (or is it really Gail?),

First, I just read your 7 rules for Romance books and I agree with every one. These days there are very few Romance authors whose works I read and even some of them have "jumped the shark." I notice this most often happens when they are picked up by the large publishing companies and/or when their books begin to first be offered in hard back.

I am re-reading the Battle Lord saga to get ready for #4 (cannot wait; will it be Feb. or March?), and there is one thing that always bothered me: the fates of Atty's mother and little sister. I know that Atty's life has been one crisis after another, but there was been no closure on this issue. Will it ever be addressed? I am not trying to act like an editor, I just want to know.

It's really Linda. Gail is my middle name and Smith is my maiden name, hence my choice of pseudonym when I write horror.

It looks like Battle Lord #4 will be later this year. Oh, and just to let you know, there will also be a book 5 (already outlined). ;) My external hard drive is at Geek Squad where I hope they can rescue my current WIPs. In the meantime, I've done no writing since Sept. :( My school's demands on my time and energy are becoming impossible to keep up with, and I come home after 9 and 10-hour days totally drained and brain dead. :( But the good news is I've been trying to come up ways to get back into the swing, and I think they're working! :D

As for Atty's mom and sister...hehehehehe. ;) Trust me, I haven't forgotten that loose thread (although I've had people argue with me that life isn't always tied up so neatly at the end.) Well, this is my book, and I don't leave such threads behind.

The Smurf is actually the result of a symbiotic relationship between two organisms. We believe that Smurfs put their 'embryos' in the button of a developing mushroom. From a distance, Smurfs seem like they are wearing a hat and pants but as you can see this is a fallacy. The fungus provides camouflage and protective epidermal layers for the creature, while the creature provides nutrients and mobility for the spreading of spores.

Smurfs are believed to be a hunter gatherer society. As you can see, this little guy is returning from a successful venture. It is generally difficult to spot a Smurf; they are very apprehensive and cunning. Sadly though, it is rumored that they are hunted for their medicinal properties. It's hard to determine but it is thought that there are not many colonies of Smurf left.

1. Corwin stared down at himself. The fresh blue t-shirt he'd donned before coming over here was already soaked with sweat, as were his jeans. Perspiration rolled down his face, and his head felt like it was going to explode. Standing in the meager shadow provided by the porch did little to keep the stifling heat from penetrating all the way to the marrow of his bones, to suck out every last drop of moisture from his body. There was no wind. It was over one hundred twenty degrees Fahrenheit, and climbing. And it was around the middle of December, a week before Christmas.

2. Holding out the handful of silk flowers, Corwin watched as she glanced down at them. "I came to give you these and wish you a Merry Christmas. And to tell you goodbye."

3. "Because I wanted you to know I care very much about you. I wanted you to know I'm not like those other guys you've dated or been engaged to, like that Dennis creep who gave you more weepy days than happy ones, and couldn't care less that you like ginger tea and PayDay candy bars. I want to prove to you that there is someone who won't treat you like crap just to make themselves look important. I want to show you that you deserve to be loved and cherished. And that person..." He pointed to himself. "...is me."

4. To his surprise, Sadie gave a soft moan and opened her mouth to touch his with the tip of her tongue. Corwin felt his walls of resistance crumbling. And when her hand pressed against his chest, then slowly began to make its way down to the front of his jeans, his whole body began shaking.

5. Silently, she began peeling off her sleeveless blouse. There was a sense of urgency to her movements, and he understood why. She began jerking the top sheet off the bed while he finished undressing and joined her.

6. She took a shaky breath. "Why now, Corwin? Why did I have to find you now? Why was I such an idiot before? We could have had so many days of happiness. We could have been planning on having a future together."

This trendy home was once a cement factory. The abandoned cement factory was discovered in 1973 and converted to this upscale home by architect Ricardo Bofill. The renovation took two years. The home contains various plants including cypresses, olive trees, palms, and eucalyptus. It serves as Bofillo’s apartment, exhibition space, model laboratory, archives, and architectural office. 1. They ate for another minute or two in silence. It was a comfortable interlude. They both needed the time to heal emotionally, and their companionship had always given them the chance to enjoy each other’s nearness. Finally, after being apart for so long, to be in each other’s company was like a long sought after wish being fulfilled. Coming back together was almost a healing in itself. It was like slipping on a comfortable article of clothing they had missed wearing. David reached across the table, palm up. Without hesitation, Cutler placed her hand in his and watched as he closed his fingers around it. That dainty hand could knock the ever-loving crap out of him. It could kill. It could do untold damage elsewhere. But he knew that deceptive-looking hand could also be incredibly gentle, as well as drive him sexually up the wall.

2. He smiled, his lips millimeters away from hers instead of inches. She could feel him breathing. The air from his nostrils feathered across her mouth. The urge to kiss him, the need to kiss him, ballooned within her. Hunger clawed at her heart. She had missed him so much, and to finally have him back was crippling her ability to concentrate. All she had to do was close her eyes and tilt her head back a tiny bit, and their mouths would connect. A small movement, the littlest effort, and...

3. “Because if our information is correct, the blue shard might be there. That’s the blue you defeated, Cut. If that diamond is actually there, you’re the only person who can identify it and be certain. And, hopefully, if there are any recreations of it, you might be able to spot the original, as well as tell us how the duplicates differ. In the meantime, I need you to heal up. You need to be a peak efficiency before you leave. As for you, Mr. Fellowes.” She gave David a steely glare. “You may have saved Cut after her battle with the blue, but from here on out things are going to get hairier. I know you worked homicide, and you’ve developed a thick skin, but are you prepared to face true horror on a regular basis?”

4. She grabbed the Walther and shoved it into her jeans pocket. Holding the bag of inert jewels in her teeth, she opened the door leading into the hallway. Double-checking to make sure it was safe, she grabbed David under the armpits and dragged him back to the office. With a little effort, she managed to hoist him out the window and get him back to the fence. Once she got him part-way under the fence, she backtracked to her swinging root, using the roof of the lab to give her the running start she needed to jump and snag it. Landing on the other side of the enclosure, she hurried back to pull him the rest of the way through, thankful he was unconscious. His limp, nearly lifeless condition made his body flexible enough to manage.

5. She lifted the jacket lapel and smelled David's scent clinging to the fabric. She recalled how they sat in the back of the pickup, her arms around him as he pulled his coat over her shoulders to keep her from getting chilled. She had snuggled against him, her cheek on his chest. As she absorbed his warmth, she'd fallen asleep, lulled by the sound of his strong, steady heartbeat. With his scent wrapped around her, Cutler drifted into unconsciousness.

6. Christine started to answer when there was a soft groan. Cutler automatically looked over at where Bar lay sprawled against the small fridge. Redness smeared the front of the white appliance. It was the wrong move to make. From the corner of her eye Cutler saw the foot aiming for the side of her face. She ducked, but not fast enough. The wooden heel of Christine's boot smashed into her cheekbone, and the world exploded in black pain.

Je t’aime Laurent may have been born blind, but that doesn't mean she can't see...auras. And a lot more. A psychic, she volunteers her services to the police, helping to solve crimes when trails run cold for the cops. The latest case she's been called in on involves a string of murders by a serial killer the press is calling The Shredder. She expects the case to be gruesome, but she doesn't expect to find the love of her life. Or a murderer who is already dead. Detective Kiel (pronounced Kyle) Stark isn't exactly what he appears to be either, something J can tell from his blazing white aura.

One of two detectives assigned to her, Kiel is attracted to the mysterious psychic who didn't react to his secret quite the way he thought she would. Instead of running in the opposite direction, screaming bloody murder, she sees him as the man he once was. He's the first “man” to call out to J's soul, and it isn't long before Kiel's captivated by her. They want a lifetime together, but getting too close comes with a price tag, one Kiel isn't sure he wants J to bear alone once he's gone. Will J be able to convince Kiel that she wants whatever time she can have with him, and will he be able to keep her safe from a killer that is no longer human?

Linda Mooney has been one of my favorite authors for some time now, and one of the reasons for that is I never know what she's going to come up with next. Although there isn't a strong romantic thread leading up to Kiel and J deciding to make what they can of a temporary relationship, Possession is a gripping, heart-pounding paranormal thriller. The fast-paced action grabbed me on page one of the prologue and then chapter one jumps a month ahead, something I wish Ms. Mooney would have noted at the beginning of the chapter because it was a little startling to find Kiel seemingly alive and well. At first, I thought the book had gone back in time.

Once I got my bearings, I had to keep reading to find out what happens, not only with the hunt for The Shredder, but with Kiel and J's love affair. Will Kiel somehow find a way to stay with J for a happy ending? Or will she lose what means the most to her, the man she's come to love with all her heart? Despite what she does for the police department, J lives a sheltered, lonely life. Before Kiel and Sam Reese, his half-brother and partner on the force, she had no one but the woman who came in daily to do her grocery shopping, banking, and cleaning. Kiel entering her life brightened her life with more than just his dazzling white aura. Frankly, I can't say anything more about Kiel without giving everything away, but just let me say, he's the great guy we all hope our daughters end up with. Even The Shredder, who's scary as hell, isn't entirely bad, and Sam is an accepting, understanding brother who isn't quite ready to let his baby brother go. I'd really like to see him get a sequel. He deserves so much more than what he was left with at the end, and I can think of several scenarios that might work to give him his own happily-ever-after.

The ending is a bit sudden, though not unexpected as this is a love story as well as a paranormal thriller. I just would have liked to have had the happiness drawn out a bit more. Otherwise, this book rocks. I definitely recommend it.

Corwin stared down at himself. The fresh blue t-shirt he'd donned before coming over here was already soaked with sweat, as were his jeans. Perspiration rolled down his face, and his head felt like it was going to explode. Standing in the meager shadow provided by the porch did little to keep the stifling heat from penetrating all the way to the marrow of his bones, to suck out every last drop of moisture from his body. There was no wind. It was over one hundred twenty degrees Fahrenheit, and climbing.

And it was around the middle of December, a week before Christmas.

He stood in front of the white door and stared at the slim, rectangular doorbell embedded in the wall. There was no knocker. Just a small cut glass window for people to peer through. A quick glance at his watch told him it was already past ten p.m., but the world was as bright as noon. Taking a deep breath, he raised his fist and knocked instead.

After a few seconds of silence, he knocked again. This time a surprised face looked out the window, spotted him, and her eyes widened further. There was the sound of a deadbolt lock sliding back, and the door opened a few inches.

Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail. Loose hairs were plastered to her face and neck from her own sweat. There was the awkward silence, then she spoke.

"Corwin?"

"Hi, Sadie."

"What are you doing here?"

Holding out the handful of silk flowers, Corwin watched as she glanced down at them. "I came to give you these and wish you a Merry Christmas. And to tell you goodbye."

Gruene Hall, Texas' oldest operating dance hall. It often hosts such Country and Western artists like George Strait, Garth Brooks, and (of course) Willie Nelson.

We had lunch at the tearoom. Like every business in this small town, it's an old home that has been renovated and converted.

These chimes were ENORMOUS! Each pipe is taller than a man, and they sound like massive church bells when they ring. The store where they were located said it takes the manufacturer 3 months to make, and cost $3000.00. (I snapped this shot with the people in it to give you a perspective.)

The antiques in this place were fantastic. My friend bought a gurgling pitcher shaped like a fish. The scissors-looking thing on the silver tray is really a candle snuffer. And the tiny porcelain "tank" on the lower left is a foot warmer. (Fill with warm water.)

This past Veteran's Day weekend I went with a friend to Gruene, Texas. Pronounced "Green", it's a very old German settlement that's "gently resisted change" since it's creation. The tiny town is basically 5 streets, with converted homes as shops, and a famous dance hall. (That night the headliner was Asleep at the Wheel.)

But what makes Gruene stand out is the beautiful sense of nostalgia and old-world charm the place gives you when you walk in. These next four pictures were taken at the general store.

That something as simple as a good photograph can increase the likelihood of an abandoned dog being adopted is well documented.

Emily Tanen had witnessed the effects of a professional photoshoot on an unwanted dog’s chances first hand during her time at the Manhattan branch of Animal Care and Control of New York City, when she took it upon herself to upgrade the shelter operator’s disposable camera to her own $1,500 Nikon, only to see the number of rescued dogs increase.

Hired as a liaison between ACCNYC and the groups that rescue shelter animals, Tanen says she was eventually fired for going out of her way to take better photos of pit bulls in a last-ditch effort to save them from being euthanized.

Tanen was told that she had violated the policy that prohibits photographing the dogs interacting with humans.

“I think they just didn’t want photos of animals that they were about to kill looking cute and adoptable and happy with people,” she says, “but they said it was because their research showed that photos with people didn’t encourage people to adopt.”

Sadly, for many of the dogs in ACCNYC’s care, Tanen was the last line of defense. Rescue groups would often be persuaded by her photos to take animals they would otherwise have passed on.
“I still remember Domino’s photo — the first pit bull we pulled from Manhattan,” Dog Habitat Rescue founder Jay Lombard said. “He was within 12 hours of being destroyed when Emily snapped a photo of him and attached it to an e-mail. That image hit me hard and I couldn’t turn away.”

1. The woman was covered so completely, only her face was visible. Oh, but what a face. It was the face of a world-class model. Young, with perfect angles and not a blemish to be seen. Lightly arched brows were the color of caramels. She was wearing a shapeless shift in a bluish-gray color. A scarf in similar shades was tied over her head, hiding the rest of her hair. But that face, those ripe lips…and those eyes.

2. “That's not what I mean, and you damn well know it.” Her head swiveled in Sam‟s direction. “You, Detective, I have no problem with. But you.” She turned back to Kiel. “There's something about you that's throwing all my beliefs into a meat grinder and grinding them to bits. You have the aura, but I can touch you. What's going on, Detective? You frighten me, and I don't like this feeling. Not one bit. If I'm going to help you solve this case, we need to be upfront with each other, and now. Or else I'm going to have to call your captain back and tell him to send me two other men, or I'm bowing out.” She paused, and Kiel could hear her racing heart. He could also see her visibly attempting to slow down her breathing.

3. Pausing outside of apartment number 316, Sam gave him a nod to go ahead. Sounding a quick sigh, Kiel tore off the tape barring them from entering and gave the handle a little jiggle to make it sound like he was using a key to open the door. Then he quickly went through the steel partition, into the apartment, and unlocked the door from the other side. J wore a little smile but said nothing, and for a second he wondered if the woman was aware of the little trick he'd pulled. Mentally shrugging, Kiel decided not to say anything unless she brought it up first. They were here to investigate a triple homicide, not discuss the attributes of a man who had died over a month ago.

4. She no longer cared about the implications or the impossibility of the situation. Lifting her arms, she felt his wide, strong shoulders and the soft short hairs at the nape of his neck as he bent his face and pressed his mouth to her neck. His arms, like wide bands of warm steel, drew her against his chest, pressing her tightly against him. To be held like this fed her soul. It bathed her parched heart with life-giving hope, and there was no way she could doubt how he felt about her. Love had its own color because she had seen it in her parents, in Douggie, and shining out of Grandmama. And this blinding beacon of light was edged in that same color like a second aura.

5. Sam ran, snatching J, then dashed past the apartment once again to reach the stairs. As he passed the open door he could barely made out a dark shape hovering like a cloud over Kiel‟s head as his brother faced the killer one-on-one. Neither he nor J made a sound as they half-ran, half-stumbled down the four flights of stairs and burst through the door into the apartment lobby. He paused a second to get his bearings, slightly disoriented because of the way they had been forced to go the back way this time. J started to say something when he tightened his grip around her waist and almost dragged her out the rear entrance.

6. She didn't stop screaming until the police burst through the door leading from the stairwell, to face the carnage and its one lone blind survivor.
